This is a very atmospheric hotel, making the most of the converted caves to provide a unique experience. Candles burn in every room, with subdued electric light, but there is also WiFi , mini fridge and modern shower. Service is first class.

Fabulous and unique hotel in the old part of Matera. Rooms are all in the original cave dwellings. Don’t panic - plenty of light and dry and airy, with excellent bathroom facilities. Staff all incredibly friendly and helpful. Great breakfast with local products. No evening restaurant, but they do serve drinks and food until 7pm. You have to park in the new town and they organise a shuttle to the hotel, which worked really well. Lots of local restaurants within easy walking distance. The hotel also organised our guide for a morning tour of Matera.

We stayed in room 3 cave room . Was blown away. Simple one of the comfiest beds ever slept in. Well equipped. Just beautiful and amazing . Bath was brilliant .

Wow. I first saw this hotel on a Travel programme years ago and had wanted to stay here ever since. We were luky enough to stay at this amazing cave hotel in Matera for our 25th Wedding anniversary, and it was more than I ever dreamed of. We stayed in Cave 10 situated at the end so you had a private little outside space. There is a small reading nook, large bedroom, separate shower/wc cave and a large separate cave housing the bath all interconnecting. It was the Cave i really hoped for, and it didn't disappoint. Lots of room and filled with lit candles, it was a dream. The breakfast room is a former church carved into the cave, and the breakfast was amazing. The service was top notch and nothing was ever too much for them. If you are looking for somewhere special to stay in Matera, this is it!!

This hotel is gorgeous and perfect in every respect - the rooms are amazing and one-of-a-kind. Everything is beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, and the staff are absolutely amazing. We have stayed at a number of luxury hotels around the world and the service at Sextantio was the best we have ever had.
