A great "cave" stay in the Matera sassi

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Nov 2024
We stayed 2 nights. Great location in the sassi and we stayed in a beautifully presented room in a cave! I don't usually comment about the room lighting but it was very well done "mood" lighting and was important given the lack of outside light. Plenty of hangers - always a plus for me! Fridge and tea making facilities in room. Glass wall between bedroom and bathroom meant little privacy (if that bothers you!). Comfy bed. Nice modern bathroom with large shower. "Dainty" breakfast - lots of different types of cake all neatly cut. Also local cheeses, egg, yoghurts and fruit on offer. Juice/water plus various coffees made to order. Friendly staff.

It was an exciting and pleasant stay in the ancient building of the amazing town. The location is great. However, it's not easy to get there on a car to unload luggage: ZTL 10-20:30 and no parking around. But the staff was very helpful and friendly.

OK, you need to walk a bit to reach it, as the car needs to stay a fee hundred meters away. But then….you are right in the heart of this magic old town. The rooms are different building and each is unique in its way. In very old walls, but with all modern amenities and comfort, and very clean. The breakfast room feels like being in a cave, and very cute and nice. We were impressed by the warm welcome and the friendliness of the staff. They will give you tailored suggestions on what to visit in which order depending on the amount of time you have, pulse some background stories. It feels like you are staying with friends.

This is a Beautiful Sassi at the center of the old city. Nice renovation and decoration. Comfortable big rooms with nice location, great staff and very helpful with wonderful generous breakfast. The location is at a Very convenient neighborhood.

Room tip: Parking outside old sassi district. Carry small luggage.

Le Malve is a hidden gem and is probably the coolest hotel experience you can get in the world. Where else can you stay in the heart of a city 7,000 years old - and stay in a cave?! The work Le Malve staff have put in is clear. This is not just a hotel, it’s an experience.

Room tip: The parking lot Le Malve suggests is perfect, only €10/day, and is an 8 minute walk away - but be prepared to hike up a bit.

Great location in the heart of the Sassi, high quality room furnishings and very helpful suggestions from reception staff on a suggested walking tour and a nearby restaurant which they booked for us and was superb.
We went with their suggestion of parking at the €10 per day place in Via Pasquale Vena which was a fairly easy 10 minute walk away, but to aid our journey we took only light baggage in with us for a 1 night stay, coping with a heavy case with all the steps up and down would be troublesome for many i think. Worth seeing Matera at different times of the day as the views change dramatically with different light & angles etc

Room tip: the hotel comprises 10 rooms which are dotted around close to the main hotel reception & restaurant building - so not all in one building
