A magnificent palazzo

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 9 Aug 2024
What a splendid Renaissance palazzo, renovated to the highest standards! We spent 2 nights here - great location (we didn’t have a car be sure to get directions if you do) and the staff were extremely helpful. Lovely breakfast, quick turnaround on laundry and our room had a beautiful view of Matera.

What a splendid Renaissance palazzo, renovated to the highest standards! We enjoyed a junior suite with a private staircase to the rooftop. Dusk from the roof terrace was magnificent with the lights of Matera coming on. Staff was very friendly and so helpful. Ahmed helped me find our car when we were misled on directions with our navigation systemTatiana made a dinner reservation for us at Annina’s, which turned out to be our best meal in Puglia. The gentleman with West Virginia connections guided us out of the courtyard parking, which though pricey, was invaluable. Breakfast in the elegant dining room had great service and a wide choice of options including fresh fruit. The walk through the first floor rooms to arrive at the breakfast will forever be memorable—stunning art, architecture and furniture. We are only sorry that our stay wasn’t longer.

I stayed 2 nights at this hotel ( being upgraded to junior suite with view on sassi. People are really kind, room is very confortable , breakfast is good ( I would have waited a little bit more if choice, like different kinds of eggs for example , but still very good )
Parking , with fee if 30 euros per day , is a real advantage as you are at the highest point of Matera. View from the terrasse is exceptional but my only regret is that this terrasse is not used the way it should bring the best experience . Just a few uncomfortable chairs and 2 tables ( you can ask a glass of wine if a beer at the reception )

An absolutely stunning historical hotel that sits on one of the highest points in Matera. Breakfast on the top level gives panoramic views of this ancient city.
The staff were so friendly and helpful giving recommendations on best places to eat which did not disappoint.
Simply outstanding hotel and one of the best we have stayed at in our multiple trips to Italy.

Nice place but clearly over rated and extremely costly with limited services.
Watch out : they take your Amex payment card to book your stay but refuse it when you pay so that they do not have to pay the fee. You clearly need a second payment card.
And they couldn't care less ...

There is no doubt that this is a spectacular former palace. You can wonder it’s public rooms, view the art work and gape at the chandeliers, but it is lacking as a hotel. I fortunately, had a substantially-sized room, but others in my group were not so fortunate. They had cramped, little spaces, with steps to the bathroom (an accident waiting to happen). My room was more a suite, with a modern bathroom, and an odd layout. There was scant lighting and rare outlets. Had to unplug lamps in order to charge devices. There is no restaurant, and a skimpy breakfast. The location is near nothing. I was on my own, and after dark I was not willing to venture many blocks to a restaurant. I ended up pleading a couple of yogurts from the desk personnel. This was not an acceptable location. The next day, the hotel was all set up for a professional meeting. I venture to say that meeting are a better use for this unusual property. With only 14 room, you are likely to get an unsuitable one.

Room tip: Ask for a suite

Front Office Palazzo Viceconte, Altro at Palazzo Viceconte, responded to this reviewResponded 31 October 2022

Dear Localcolorlocalcolor,
thank you for being a guest at Palazzo Viceconte.
We take your suggestions positively, for us they are useful to improve the services we offer.
Regarding the size of the rooms, we have different types and in any case all are basic comfortable for two people.
We are sorry to read your disappointment regarding the location of the hotel, as it is actually located in the heart of Matera within walking distance of all the tourist attractions as well as bars and restaurants. In fact, it is one of the most appreciated points by guests and easily understood by reading the reviews.
Best regards.
