A magical time

Review of Aque Cave
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Oct 2024
Aque Cave was the most unique hotel I've ever had the opportunity to stay in. The hotel is completely unlike anything I've ever experienced. It was a magical stay for me and my husband. We stayed 2 nights to explore Matera. The hotel is clean, the room we stayed in was spotless. The room had candles on when we arrived and this created such an ambient atmosphere in the cave (room). Breakfast was local produce, lots of choice. Paula was very helpful and took time to tell us some of the history of the hotel and Matera and made great recommendations for us to eat and places to visit. She even booked the restaurants for us. Thank you for such am amazing time! 5 stars for everything, I cant find any fault! Hotel is in the perfect location to explore the sassi
Date of stay: October 2024
Room Tip: I wouldn't take heels to the sassi. The streets and steps are steep and cobbled. Just a tip 😉

What an absolutely magical hotel! My partner and I arrived late on a Thursday night and the welcome was warm and the room amazing! We were lucky and received an upgrade and the room was everything I had hoped for, and more! It oozed charm and quality with lots of space. Francesco and Paula are brilliant hosts and nothing is to much trouble. Breakfast is sumptuous and extremely tasty with a good variety to suit all and the Wi-Fi is excellent! I'd always wanted to visit Matera and this hotel was perfectly placed for exploring all the city has to offer. I feel very lucky to have found such a gem and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Matera!

Aqua Cave is one of the most magical places we have ever had the opportunity to sleep in. Everything was wonderful. Despite the enormous heat outside, it was wonderfully cool inside the suite, and the pleasant smell of the aroma diffusers and lit candles created a unique atmosphere. The wonderful hosts Paola and Francesco were the perfect complement to the whole experience. Very tasty breakfasts and perfect location. What more could you want? The only thing we didn't like was that we had to leave the place after two days :)

Now that we have been to Matera and understand how the development of the abandoned caves in hotel rooms work, all makes sense.
There are 4 rooms only, along with a small reception area and deep down breakfast room.
Room was beautifully stylish, and with the dehumidifier switched off overnight lovely and peaceful.
Host was delightful and very knowledgeable about Matera.
We were on a cycling trip up thru Italy and thought Matera very special and Aque Cave a great place to stay.

The city of Matera is unbelievable to see but more importantly this hotel is second to none. Paola and Francesco are the perfect hosts. They are friendly, helpful and most importantly love what they are doing and it shows in how wonderfully you are treated. As for the hotel, you will probably never stay in such a unique place. They have restored it with the utmost care and attention to detail. The breakfast was wonderful. If you ever get a chance to stay here don’t pass it up, you won’t be disappointed.

We fell in love with Matera - and Aque Cave - on our recent visit. What a beautiful place. From the moment we arrived - lugging our ridiculously large suitcases up the hill - we were welcomed with open arms. Literally, in this case, as Paola met us and insisted on taking over. We had taken advantage of the recommended "park and transfer" service which was excellent. It cost 25 euros per day. I had been slightly nervous of the concept of staying in a cave for 3 nights but as soon as I saw our lovely room - Talia - I adored it. It was extremely spacious with a door directly out to the terrace and had a beautiful bathroom with huge shower. Both rooms elegantly furnished. We did look at the other 3 rooms before we left but we were more than happy with Talia which we would choose again. I spent a lot of time sitting on the gorgeous terrace and The Husband spent a lot of time drinking coffee. I enjoyed chatting to Paola about travel, food and life in general and appreciated her help in booking a restaurant. We didn't spend so much time with Francesco but he was charming. The ladies who help with breakfast and housekeeping are friendly and helpful. We also enjoyed the company of Gilbert the cat. Breakfast, by the way, was lovely. The only small thing I mentioned when I was there was it maybe a good idea to get in a supply of orange juice as we Brits love it in the morning. All in all we had an absolutely wonderful time and were very sorry to leave. If you want a bit of elegance and peace and quiet but be literally a few steps away from the centre of Sassi Caveoso, then you have found it. Don't hesitate to book. You can tell how much love has gone into renovating this building and continues in the running of this lovely place.

Room tip: Use the recommended park and ride service. You absolutely don't want the bother of trying to park in Matera and you don't need a car.
