We spent 2 nights at this hotel in late June, and to be honest chose it only because others were already full when we were making our bookings for our holiday (in January ... a forewarning to book early for Matera!) While this hotel is in a wonderful position to explore this amazing town, this 'hotel' let itself down in so many ways, that could so easily be fixed! We agree with other comments about the parking - the receptionist was less than helpful. The hotel is not easy to find, and once found and you have climbed all those stairs with your luggage the last thing you want to hear is that the secure parking is more than a kilometre away - and no offer of any help with transport etc (which we would happily have paid for!) We knew parking was going to be an issue, but in our correspondence with the hotel prior to our arrival they had made it very clear that parking was available 10 minutes from the hotel. We ended up parking on the street just above the sassi - not secure, but fine (but quite a walk up!!) The room itself, in a cave, was very large - but for the price very basic. And it's the little things that count - we had to ask for a pillow case for one of the pillows, the towels were clean but still a little damp, the breakfast was poor (one morning the croissants were stale, obviously left overs from the day before.) Wifi virtually non-existent, and only available in courtyard, directly outside office area. (We were told this was because of the thick walls of the hotel, yet we could get the signal from other nearby hotels, but not from ours!) And as we checked out we realised that the gentleman we had seen a few times standing in the courtyard was actually the owner, and it was his son in the office. Yet at no time was there any welcome, 'good day', or hospitality shown. And we speak some Italian too! Such a shame - with just a little bit more effort from the owners this really could be a lovely little hotel.
