Great value hotel

Review of Palace Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 12 Jan 2016via mobile
We booked this hotel online for an amazing price last August. We stayed several nights and were impressed by the staff and location. A 10 min walk to the Sassi area and close to the railway. The hotel although slightly dated was very clean and we would definitely stay again.

This is a fairly typical 30 year old hotel in a slightly awkward location. The building looks tired and the rooms are on the small side but adequately furnished.

It is about a 15 minute walk to the Sassi which of course is the main attraction in Matera which just about makes it acceptable as a location. It is a favourite with the tour companies and there is a constant turnover. There are no other restaurants or bars near the hotel so a walk to town is essential.

On the plus side the free WIFI is good as is the Sky TV connection which included BBC World News.

Breakfast was adequate without being memorable.

The lifts are inadequate so it's better to get a room on a lower floor if possible so you can walk up the stairs if necessary.

Overall, this is fine for a few days but certainly no longer.

Stayed 3 nights at the Palace and only had one gripe, the second morning breakfast was decidedly below par, there had been a bus tour in the breakfast room early and they had obviously taken whatever was available, upset the waiters and left the other patrons without much choice at all.apart from this one hiccup the Palace was excellent the room was very large with a big balcony and all amenities were outstanding would recommend but be careful of bus tours first thing

Room tip: 326 was excellent

Well located hotel a short walk from the Centre and Sassi. Located in centre of modern mixed office residential redevelopment (one small site to the south east is awaiting development)
Excellent helpful staff.
Rooms are clean and housekeeping staff very attentive. Rooms have good air conditioning which can be controlled from the room (outside temperature was consistently around 35C during our stay, but the room temperature was always comfortable)
Hotel is a little worn in places and lacked a bit of atmosphere when it was not fully occupied, but nothing to detract from our stay. We certainly judged this hotel as good value for money.
Breakfasts were typically Italian, with a mix of fruit, cereals, cold meats and cheese and excellent pastries.
Plenty free parking if you're driving and easily accessible.
Free reliable wifi

Our third hotel in Italy, produced the worst breakfast.

Rooms very average certainly not,up,to,the star rating.

Difficult to find, signage poor.

The good drinks reasonably priced, until they ran out of beer.

Do not expect four star, hopefully you will get a good deal and the price will reflect its status.

A rather tired hotel in need of some upgrading; good location within easy walking distance of twon centre. However, some obvious deficiencies: (1) breakfast is unimpressive; (2) service (particularly at breakfast) is poor at best; basic friendliness and helpfulness are obviously alien concepts to breakfast room attendants; (3) internet reliability was poor.

Room tip: Recommend asking for room on one of the upper floors.
