A unique experience!

Staying in a cave was not exactly what we expected. It is fascinating that people lived here for as long as they did. Of course, they did not have the amenities that were provided for us. The rooms were very nice and the breakfast was great. We were not able to regulate the temperature in our room, however. It may have something to do with ensuring that it does not get too damp. It is definitely worth trying, but I would not stay more than 2 nights.

Room Tip: If you need to get laundry done, do it here. It is very reasonable.

The hotel was well located. Staff was generally friendly. We found a few little bugs in our bed three nights in a row! Staff seemed put out when we mentioned this and never helped us out. We killed the insects ourselves and slept in the bed. No bites, thank goodness. Not sure I would stay here again. Very weak and spotty WiFi

This is an amazing luxury experience hotel/spa in an ancient city with incredible views/walking tours and self exploration. The spa has many options and the cave thermals are not to be missed for only 25€ for a 90 minute session! The hotel and staff are first rate in a medieval setting. It’s pretty magical and historical, yet with modern shopping and delicious restaurants!

We travel a lot and have stayed in many hotels over the years and this hotel has the WORST, RUDEST staff EVER. The receptionist (she has died gray hair) is so unwelcoming, unfriendly, dismissive, eyes rolling whenever you ask her a question — it was unbelievable to walk into what is supposed to be a luxury hotel to be greeted by her. To say, she doesn’t care about her guests is an understatement. Her attitude is the worst! Her awful attitude has also clearly trickled down to some of the staff, because they are also equally rude. The masseuse in the spa sat and argued with me and basically shamed me for not knowing exactly how things run. She did not like that they scheduled my massage a half hour earlier than what she wanted, so she belittled me to the point I was practically in tears before my appointment.

When we checked out, the same awful receptionist was there to proved zero help. She again rolled her eyes at us and was clearly eager to get back to texting on her phone and get us out of her (poorly died gray hair) way.
We love Italy and the people — this is the first Italian I’ve come across that is this unkind.

Save your time and money and go somewhere else where the staff actually cares about you. Beautiful hotel, horrendous staff.

Matera is extraordinary and staying at Locanda Di San Martino will give you the real flavor of the place. If you become uncomfortable with things that are a little different then you might have a problem. There are few rooms and they're all different and all require a different amount of stairs, so be aware. We stayed in number 8, called La Chiesa (the church) and that's exactly what it must have been. It was huge, with high ceilings and a bathtub located in the room, rather than in a bathroom. We loved it! But then we're pretty easy going. There is a gorgeous view when you step outside the room. I recommend this hotel if you are even a little adventurous.

Room tip: Room number 8 is probably one of the largest and most impressive of the rooms.

Beautiful location deserves 5 stars.
Staff service quality 1 star.
Access to the hotel if you come by car you will test local driver and friendly mindset to help you to your room - 2 stars.
Even helping to carry luggage’s it is not on their mindset to help customers.

Avoid to book breakfast is too poor to loose time go outside and enjoy the views.

Inside the room is fine except they should install door for the shower and also light and not a led flashing purple color.

We will come back next year to matera for 3 nights but not at this hotel which with all my respect to the owner … they should train their staff to understand service mindset and not speaking in Italian saying bad words thinking we are stupid and do not understand.

Room tip: Avoid to arrive late at Matera. Avoid to book with breakfast. Avoid heavy luggage if you are going to this hotel you will have to carry.
