We were told this building was an old church and we stayed in the room with the original staircase (the one that has a terrace)! The view from the terrace is lovely and got the sun in the morning. It was very quiet and you could hear the birds throughout the day.
The hot tub is a lovely addition to the second floor. The hotel provides salts, robes and slippers. The hot tub is also a bath so you fill it yourself and therefore no chlorine etc.
The room was well laid out and decorated - very in keeping with the style. It had a minibar for drinks. The room does have a hairdryer.
The one downside of the room is that whilst there is some air con and a dehumidifier, I was unaware from the reviews what to expect from staying in a cave hotel. From this experience and a tour I did whilst in Matera, the caves do not have great ventilation and thus there was a stuffiness to the room. This didn’t bother me the first day but the second and third I noticed my clothes felt damp as did the bedding. This is perhaps different in the colder months we temperatures were high in July. This is not a criticism of the hotel but perhaps more ignorance on my part as I didn’t know to expect this.
The hotel provides breakfast for the guests which is mostly cold - breads, cheese, meat, fruit, cereal and pastries but they did also have eggs and bacon available.
We parked in Damasco carpark which is handy and central. Don’t trust the first route suggested on the Apple Maps however because there was a more direct route with less steps involved! As in all of Matera and particularly for the view you will need to walk a lot of steps. The hotel organised a porter to help us with our bags on the way back which we were very appreciative of.
Overall I would recommend the hotel provided you take note about the room humidity!
