Everyone mentions the walk into sorrento centre and no pavement and the 4 lane junction just outside so I won’t rehash any of that.

The hotel is a 3 star and you get what you pay for - if you pay for a standard room that is what you get and these seem to be on the ground floor and quite small and you don’t get as much in way of changing of towels. We asked and paid for a superior room with a garden view and this was spacious and had a fridge and overlooked the trees and olive grove and was fairly quiet - we could see and hear a little stream. We had our towels and bedding changed daily and it was spotlessly clean - yes the bathroom had a bit of mould evident but it is a humid climate and there is no fan. It could have done with a bit of painting throughout but we paid a low price and we did not expect a high end finish room with mod cons. It is rustic but adequate. Plenty of wardrobe and shelf space and there were even hangers in the wardrobe. The fridge hosted a mini bar which was checked and charged for - expensive but if needs must then you factor it in. We removed some stuff and bought our own supplies from the supermarket.

The pool was quiet most days with plenty of sun-beds, which were quite comfortable. The pool was lovely and clean when we arrived but a week later and it was definitely needing a further clean - we didn’t seen anyone clean it all week and after a week of everyone’s suncream it needed it. Also the area around it is crazy paved and there are tiny little stones, plus fruit was falling off the trees -we felt they could have brushed the area daily to make it nicer, plus the plants in some of the planters had died and again a bit of care and attention is all that is needed in this area. The front of the hotel looked stunning with the flowers blooming and it is a shame this did not carry on into all areas.

The bar had plenty of sofas and chairs but they weren’t the most comfortable and there was no music so it was a bit soulless - some background music would have helped - though we could not fault the bar man on an evening - he was happy to serve and always smiling.

The restaurant was clean and had plenty of tables with breakfast and evening meals served here - breakfast was plentiful and self service and most days consisted of scrambled eggs and mini hot dog sausages as the hot options (bacon on a weekend) plus there were plenty of breads and rolls with a toaster to grill your own toast. There were also cereals, meats, cheese, cakes and every jam possible so choice was great. The evening meal was 3 course and you chose your options at breakfast and in the starters there was always a soup, a pasta dish and a risotto of some sort and mains were usually some type of escalope, a fish dish and an omelette and dessert was whatever cake had been bakes, whatever selection of ice cream they had or a bowl of fruit. The gala dinner on a Thursday was an experience and quite charming. They say the menu is fixed but we told the waiter we didn’t like veal and was offered chicken and we heard someone else substitute the starter with soup. They had quite a good wine menu and did full or quarter bottles and if you didn’t finish it they were happy to write your room number on and save it for another night - price for a Pinot Grigio was €13 for a full bottle. A quarter bottle of prosecco was €5. The waiters are mainly older and can seem quite stern but if you spoke to them nicely they were fine back with you.

Lunchtime snacks could be ordered at the bar and these were served on the terrace, which was nice and prices were quite reasonable- a pizza €5 or a sandwich €6.50. I had these accompanied by the Metropole cocktail -which was amaretto and freshly squeezed juice - really nice.

Reception were helpful. Some more than others.

We did enjoy our stay and we would come back as it is a good base to walk into sorrento without being in the busy hustle and bustle.

Room Tip: For quietness ask for a garden view room as these also get the sun all day

Just back from an 8 day holiday with our one year old. It's tough enough holidaying with a baby but all the staff at the Metropole made it so easy and we're very accommodating and so friendly. Room was basic with Fab view of mount visuvius from our balcony. Buffet every morning and Something different in the menu for dinner every evening for everyone's taste. Waiters were lovely (especially Luigi who was allways smiling ) . Pool was great also. Don't have one thing bad to say about it. We really enjoyed our stay here. Would definitely go back. Bit of a dodgey walk for about 5minutes from hotel down town until you meet the parts but to be honest after two days you get used to it and the traffic expect walkers.

Firstly this review isn't meant to disrespect those people who have enjoyed their stay here, but is simply an honest opinion of our thoughts & recent experience.
Location. Not ideal, as simply too far from the town & the treacherous 20 minute walk is not to be ignored for those who may not be the most agile or of a nervous disposition.
Hotel. The building/fixtures & fittings are in dire need of maintenance & updating. There is a severe lack of character & leaves you feeling drained & beyond your years.
The rooms are very basic, clean, but with a lack of basic requirements such as a fridge or tea & coffee making facilities.
Dining is another experience, but not a good one to be honest. I have had better food & servicr many years ago when at primary school. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but truth is the evening menu is cheap & lacks imagination & quality, I think the oven chips was the final straw.....
Pool & outside areas are similar to the inside & require urgent attention to bring them into even the late last century.
The staff are pleasant enough & dress for their individual positions, & I have read other reviews that portray this as a typical Italian hotel, but unfortunately if that where the case the Italian tourist industry would be on its knees, & it clearly isn't.
Whilst I realise this review may sound harsh, but in all honesty the experience of the hotel almost ruined a lovely holiday in a beautiful part of the world. There are some beautiful hotels closer to Sorrento town & it was my mistake in not investigating the accommodation in more depth before booking.

We had a very pleasant weeks stay here. The hotel is quite traditional Italian, rooms are quite spacious with good views. The staff are very helpful and friendly, the only thing that prevents an excellent rating is the variable quality of the food, an Italian cross withsome British elements which doesn't really hit the mark
