We had booked a room at Hotel Sonya, recommended by Rick Steves. However, when we arrived, they told us they had put us in their sister hotel, Hotel Opera Roma. It is right down the street and our reception was warm and friendly. This was our first night in Italy (ever), so the reception was important to us.
Our room was on the third floor. It was European small but comfortable enough. Thankfully, there is an elevator since I can't imagine having to schlep our luggage up all those stairs. It was comfortable and quiet except for one day when I was serenaded by lovely violins and a soprano practicing in the opera house next door. Certainly nothing to complain about.
The hotel is a good value for the location. Close to the subway (waaaayyy crowded) and the buses (less so). It's also within walking distance of the Vatican Museum, the Forum, and the Pantheon. There are probably nicer hotels in other areas, but we were perfectly happy here.
The breakfast buffet, included in the rate, was wonderful. Freshly squeezed orange juice, pastries, ham and cheese, specialty coffees, fresh fruit, all served on white table cloths.
