Wake up early and go the fountain before the tourist army descends upon the small piazza. Throw two coins in the fountain over the left shoulder - one coin for a return to Rome and one for good fortune. By mid-day the fountain is packed and its more of a shuffle to get down to the base. Enjoy your day in Rome, then return to Trevi at night and take in the statues and history. The restaurants around Trevi, however, are tourist traps and outrageously priced.
I went to Rome and of course I visited The Trevi fountain, otherwise according to tradition if you don't toss a coin in the fountain you wouldn't be able to come back, so just in case... I threw 2.
Even though this is one of the main attractions in Rome, is not easy to find due to the small streets that can take you there, but don't get discouraged... It is worth it!
And although in the movie Federico Fellini makes Anita Ekberg to go inside the fountain you are encouraged not to do the same. There are security guards which will be very annoyed at people trying to do this, even if it's only to get the best picture! So... Please respect it and see it from the distance.
The Trevi Fountain is fantastic and I threw away the maps I had and spent my time going in different directions from the Fountain and just wandered around Rome and enjoying finding my way around
Outstanding site to see in Rome. We had a private driver and guide so we parked several hundred feet from the fountain and spent time with hundreds of our closet friends :) enjoying the fountain, taking pictures and of course threw coins in the fountain so that we insured our return to Rome.
We only stayed 5 minutes, but we're glad we saw it. It's so busy, so keep your belongings close. Quite close to some good shops too!
