Arrived using the Hop On Hop Off Bus - wasn't sure whether to join the queue for tickets or join a tour - touts everywhere and can be a bit annoying. Worked our way through the throng of touts and people and jagged a tour which was well priced and didn't go through the "tour" gates like the other hundreds. Our tour was one of only a couple that entered through the Death Gate and brought you into the floor of the arena. Fabulous to look up at the levels and be so close to the dungeons below. Great guide, very knowledgeable, took us up to the other levels as well and we really enjoyed learning about the history of the Colosseum from the time it was first built and used, right through to modern times. What was supposed to be a 30 to 40 minute tour was almost an hour. I do not need any walking aids, other than using a hiking stick when negotiating uneven surfaces and took it with me on this occasion which was most useful. Also staff were considerate when seeing the hiking stick and allowed me the use of the elevator to the top instead of climbing the very steep stairs. This courtesy was much appreciated.

You have to see this place if you are in Rome. It is not overrated. The area around it is also amazing. There are some nice views of the city.

With out on doubt, if you want to get the historical Roma feeling. I will recommend a guided tour with skip the line.

We decided to do this attraction alone - no pre-booking, no guide, no skip the line.
We arrived around 4pm, queued approx ten minutes for tickets. Paid 12 euros each (under 18yrs, free).
Joined the entrance queue, and although it curved a long way around the buillding, we were through the scanners and inside in around 30minutes.
Be aware there are lots of guys with staff shirts on hassling to upgrade you to skip the line, and telling you the line you're in will take up to two hours!
Once inside - wow. The scale of this impressive building is awesome. We completed our walk around in just over an hour. Granted the guided tour would've been very knowledgeable, but we were happy to go ourselves and just experience the building.
Our ticket is valid for two days, and includes the Roman Forum too, so we're heading back there today..

Thank Elizabeth G
