Stayed at the Hotel Alfieri as a short midweek break March 2018. 1:30 flight to Milan Malpensa, short 50 minute bus ride to the station (14 euro rtn) and 1:25 on the train (1st Class 22 euro rtn) to Desenzano Del Garda then a short taxi ride to the hotel in (new) Sirmione (18 euro). Sounds complicated but it was a doddle and part of the fun - all tickets booked before leaving the UK on t'interweb but to be honest that was unnecessary and perhaps over cautious on our first trip to Italy.
Hotel was just fabulous; read some of the reviews but have nothing but good to say from our experience. Stayed B&B only, room was simple but comfortable and very warm, bed was great, bathroom good with a fabulous shower and the staff were polite, helpful and very efficient. It is a 3* complex with a pool on the roof (too cold to be open in March) a beautiful marble staircase with a carpet runner to prevent slips, views are urban but then you're only 3 mins walk from the breathtaking Lake Garda. Breakfast was Continental, plentiful, varied, hot (or cold) and tasty; great value for money overall. Didn't try the bar or restaurant for dinner as there was too much to do outside for our short stay. No kettle in the rooms so take your own. And no fridge. But so what? You're in Italy! Enjoy it and get out for a coffee :) Those requiring a constant power source for myriad electricals beware; there were 2 types of socket in our room, neither of which accommodated a standard 2 pin European adapter but you can buy a 3-pin one (5eu) at the market that fits some.
5 mins walk up the road to the small commercial centre with quite a few restaurants - had the best restaurant meal of my life in one opposite the market but can't remember the name. On the main road anyway - try it. It was off season so not a lot open but the supermarket is central and very good.
30+ mins walk onto the peninsular (isthmus?!) to Old Sirmione, a pleasant walk along good footpaths alongside the lake and busy road. Lots to do here with shops of all sizes and styles, lots of restaurants and snack bars, a couple of spas - visited the main one (Terme?) 26 euro each for 2 hours basic entry with towels and robes supplied - you need bathers and flip flops and you MUST wear a cap in the pools (supplied) - steam baths and saunas were excellent and a good selection of outdoor heated pools, perfect for a rainy afternoon. Vast selection of treatments available.
The castle (8 euro) was great for views but limited in what it could offer otherwise and a lot of steps if you're not so nimble on your toes; well worth the effort to get up the tower for the stunning views over the marina and centre and out onto the lake. Buy a joint ticket (12 euro) and also get access to the Roman Villa, a must-see because it is huge and set beautifully on the end of the peninsular. Lots to see here and 2 hours will fly by; it really is the most remarkable thing. Also walking back into the resort centre you'll pass a church with, of all things, an artillery piece outside. Look inside the church for some stunning murals, old foundations and some peace and quiet. From the castle there's a footpath that runs around the end of the peninsular for about a mile and a half right on the shoreline; great for views, bathing (summer) twitching or soaking up the sun. A lovely walk but again not for the less mobile though you really should try bits of the path. Went back in to Old Sirmione at night (8pm) but off season not much was open - deserted in fact! Though there were a few good restaurants to be had, staff as ever superb. Be prepared though, it is quite expensive. Average price for a meal for two with a couple of drinks was 50+ euro but it was invariably excellent food. Local rose wine very good too.
That was it, first trip to Italy and we're smitten. Its lovely and the Hotel Alfieri whilst a bit away from the main resort attractions was the perfect base for our trip and we will be back. In the summer!

I have just returned from a 3 day stay at the Hotel Alfieri Lake Garda. The hotel was spotless the staff very helpful and friendly. The rooms modern and spacious. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in a basic double room and it was perfect, we had a view looking over the lake (even though in the distance it was still lovely). I noticed on the first floor the rooms seem to be a bit more luxurious but I was perfectly happy with the room we had.

Have to concur with the other reviews , do not be put off by the 3 star rating , just think italian panache for flair and style . couldn't fault it for its cleanliness either . the reception staff were very accommodating , informative and down to earth .
the walk from the hotel to the fort along the lake on a sunny day was sublime
we ( my friend and I) were in sirmione for two nights , anything we did we thoroughly enjoyed , the walks, the icecream , the old fort
getting to the hotel from milan airport was easy peasy and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again
would have loved a fridge in the room but thats just a minor point
although it was out of season the area was still busy and did not affect out time there

take the train / bus to see the beautiful country side , you can sit on the upper level on the train , spectacular views
we loved it and would not hesitate to go back there
Ps the food and staff at the La Foresta are worthy of a mention also

Having never visited Italy before, we were bowled over by our time in Sirmione. The hotel Alfieri was modern, clean and friendly, providing all we needed, and was well located. Though not in the old part of town, it was a lovely walk along the shores of Lake Garda to the busy centre of the old town, and buses offered a cheap and efficient alternative after a busy day. There are plenty of local restaurants, but we preferred to travel to the old town most evenings and found a number of excellent places to eat. The food at the hotel was also excellent, and the breakfast catered for everyone's' tastes. The rooftop swimming pool, though a little chilly in September, provided a relaxing venue for a drink whilst soaking up the lovely views over the lake. I'd highly recommend both Sirmione and the Hotel Alfieri, as a great base for a holiday on lake Garda.
