Il Clandestino specializes in fish and seafood - not the type of cuisine I usually prefer, but the food was exceptional. Don't expect to find anything as basic as fish and chips; every dish was creatively and carefully put together and it tasted delicious! Our waiter was very attentive and spoke perfect English, explaining the Italian menu in detail. We all chose set menus, which was a great way to try a range of dishes. We arrived at 19:30 for dinner, and there were still people hoping to get a seat at 22:00. However, as it did get quite busy, and with only one waiter, it took us much longer to pay and leave than we had wanted it to.

We haven't been to Stresa for 5 years, so a repeat visit to Il Clandestino was at the top of our list. I wandered in one day to make a reservation, to find chef/padrone Franco sitting in the restaurant, chatting with a friend. After indulging my elementary Italian to make the booking, he switched into English and said "you've been here before, haven't you?'

I suspect nobody visits Il Clandestino without Franco making them feel a bit special. Even while producing remarkable meals, he has time to come out into the dining area and talk to just about every guest. Not just small talk, either: on this occasion we were considering one of the tasting menus, but there was a lobster ravioli included that I can't eat because of allergies. No problem! Right on the spot, Franco suggested he could make me an alternative version with locally-caught perch. When it arrived at the table it was even a different shape from my wife's lobster version, just so there could be no confusion!

Because we were having the tasting menu, I asked the waiter for a wine recommendation. In a lot of places this would be an open invitation to be ripped off, but our waiter immediately suggested a prosecco at 25 euros per bottle! Very good it was, too.

There are a few meat dishes for ichthyophobes, but if you don't like fish and seafood this may not be the place for you. For most of us, though, it's a special place to visit, thanks to Franco and his excellent staff.

Our host recommended this 1* restaurant to us. Never having been to a 1* before we were very dubious and slightly nervous to say the least.
Marco our waiter could not have been more helpful or patient with us. He very professionally and friendly guided us through some suggestions of wine and food taking into account our likes and dislikes.
We ended up having a Fantastic experience as well as Top Class food like we have never eaten before.
Everything we ate tasted sublime (heavenly). The genius chef “Franco” came out to shave some magic truffle on our risotto. He also came to say goodbye which was very kind of him considering how busy he was.
Yes it seemed expensive to us but worth every penny for the taste and memories.

On the recommendation of our hotel concierge we gave this a try as we were in the mood for fish. Very glad for the recommendation. From the moment we entered the service was attentive and friendly without being over the top. Franco's food was simple, elegant and delicious. Lovely pasta and a great fish dish. Food allergy was accommodated with grace and ease. Magnificent

6 of us walked in late with no reservations, but they took great care of us. The chef came out to talk about what was available on his menu and we had a great meal!
