“Great little place with great staff!”
Reviewed 10 April 2012

When arriving in Venice it took us over an hour to find the hotel, which was a little disheartening at the time however on arrival the staff were exceptionally helpful. The room wasn't amazing and didn't have a canal view like stated on the website we booked through. However it was neat and clean and all we really expected for a budget trip to Venice.
Despite struggling to find the hotel on arrival, the location turned out to be great, very central for St Marks and The Rialto and in a quiet setting which was nice as the streets were very busy.
Breakfast was great, there is a decent selection and the staff member serving it was very helpful and accommodating. We had an early flight home and one staff member made the effort to bring us a bag full of breakfast items the night before so we wouldn't go without. Finally, as mentioned in my title, the staff were great, we only spoke to two female members of staff but both were lovely, friendly and helpful.
Would definately stay again. It was perfect for a weekend get a way in Venice!

At first we were a little worried about the directions on the website, but quickly realized that they were wonderfully accurate and we found the place with absolutely no problems. We had a great room, one of the biggest in all 6 weeks we spent in Italy and Greece. There was a mini fridge, and gorgeous glass candeliers in our room and also in the dining room. There was a computer with free internet, although no wireless. Airconditioning was included.

My husband and I found Venice in August to be hot and crowded and a little too crazy for us. We didn't really have good experiences with the food or the service, but this hotel was a perfect break from all of that, it was calm and clean and quiet. The breakfast each morning was fantastic, we lingered in the breakfast room with coffee and tea and really enjoyed it.

We shared a bathroom, but you would hardly even know it. Unlike our hotel in Florence, this one was kept immaculately clean, the hand towels were kept fresh, we never had to wait and it felt like a private bathroom. We also had cute little robes in our room, which is something I love in a hotel, especially when I had to wander out in public spaces to get to the bathroom and didn't want to change out of pj's every time. I loved it here, one of my favourite hotels of the trip!

I have one small complaint - nothing to do with the hotel in any way - one night an American family came in after midnight to check in and disrupted the whole hotel when the mother realized that a 'shared' bathroom meant sharing with other people. She was exceptionally rude, yelling at the staff and saying how in America we never share bathrooms, and refusing to even look and see how clean and wonderful everything was. Instead she tried to demand that he call the owners in the middle of the night and screamed and yelled in front of other guests. Please please please, when you are travelling, realize you are there for the experience of living in another country, it will not be exactly the same as home and that is part of the fun. We found the Italians to be very accomodating, the hotel staff all over Italy were for the most part friendly and helpful, they put up with our attempts to speak Italian and made much better effort at speaking English for us. We had an amazing 3 weeks there, and I know the majority of travellers will agree with me. But it was embarassing to see my side of the globe represented like that in a hotel that was so wonderful.

I stayed here with my boyfriend for 2 days in July. We were doing a budget trip, so we didn't want to stay anywhere fancy and did not expect amazing accommodations. However, I think you could find a better hotel for the price than Ca Formosa. The rooms are fine but the walls are paper thin. We suffered through some very noisy neighbors and a fire alarm that went off for 20 minutes before we had to go to the hotel next door to ask them to turn it off. The shower isn't the best -- there isn't much area for you to put your belongings while you shower. The breakfast is decent, however, with a good variety of things to choose from. The hotel was overall decent but I would try somewhere else next time.

We reserved through the hotel's web site and confirmed via e-mail two days before arrival. When we showed up, the desk clerk seemed disconcerted and spent a long time studying the printouts we showed him of our correspondence. Finally he made a phone call, then said he would take us to the "main entrance of the hotel," which turned out to be an obviously different hotel across the street. The concierge at that hotel showed us to a very nice room, in the center of which was a pile of someone else's luggage, which was quickly taken away. When I went down to the desk a little later there was an incoming party complaining loudly about not getting the room they'd reserved (our room, for all I know). At breakfast the next day, we met yet another couple who'd been through the same weird experience we had.

From other reviews it's obvious that some people have had very good experiences with this place. But we came away feeling that we'd been played with, and that if you plan to stay here, you're more or less rolling the dice as to the outcome.

Room Tip: Pray hard.

When making your way to Ca Formosa, be sure to have a good Venice map on hand! We arrived at the hotel door in the mid-afternoon, and were greeted with a sign that asked as to go around the corner to a different property to begin our check-in process, as no staff were available at this time at the front desk. Luckily, this second property was just around the corner, and the man who helped us check in was helpful and spoke English well. The only downside to this hotel is that guests must be willing to climb long flights of stairs, with no elevator available. This hotel is actually like a B&B, with a comfortable common area including dining tables (for the complimentary breakfast), couches, and a computer with free internet access! Our rooms were tiny, fairly old, and decorated in an old fashion, but comfortable enough. I believe we did get an upgrade when we checked in -- the two-bedroom, one bathroom set-up was perfect, as we were traveling with another couple. Some of the staff here did not speak English, and the breakfast was not as good as some other locations we stayed in during our trip (they did not serve cappucino!). The location (close to Piazza San Marco), friendly staff, and free internet were enough for me to give this place a 4 out of 5 rating, instead of a 3.
