Certificate of Excellence

It is very unusual that I bother to write a review of a hotel, but the Villa Ducale, Toarmina is certainly worth my effort.

Overall I would rate the hotel as being excellent. It is a small boutique hotel, which has an outstanding view of both Toarmina as well as Mount Etna. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, only too happy to assist in booking restaurants etc. The hotel staff are also very gay friendly, but there are a wide variety of hotel guests, including some families.

The rooms are all slightly different sizes etc, but appointed to a high level. Be sure to get a room in the main part of the hotel rather than the annexe over the road (where most of the suites are I believe). Also avoid rooms with the courtyard view - make sure of a view of Etna.

In the room there was an exceptional level of cleanliness, with a lovely room fragrance used. The bathroom was again clean to a degree beyond most hotels and was newly updated. The jaccuzzi shower however lacked sufficient water pressure to be impressive. The room also had a good balcony, efficient Air con tea/coffee making facilities and Sky TV.

The guests have a free glass of wine on arrival and most guests have a glass of wine and home made nibbles each night on the breakfast terrace between 7pm-8pm to watch the sun set behind Etna, after which many get the hotels shuttle bus to the main town (taxis are €15 each way). The hotel has a private beach (Lido Stockholm) which is well organised but fairly expensive at €20 per day - again can be accessed by hotel shuttle bus.

The hotels position at the top of a steep hillside above the town gives it a great view, but means it is a little isolated from the town taking about 10 mins by taxi/bus.

I dont mind if this sounds like an advert for the hotel, but I have just had a very enjoyable stay at the hotel. Not cheap but you get what you pay for!

A bit tricky to find but well worth it. This place is a gem. Service some of the best we have ever experienced, Personal, individually tailored and very helpful. Welcome drink on terrace a nice touch and the early evening canapes. The views of the bay of Naxos and Etna are stunning. Even parked our car for us and also recommended the intimate Don Camillo restaurant (you have to try the meatballs!). Very efficient free shuttle service to and from Taormina. Our only problem was that we had to leave after only 3 nights as hotel was fully booked. A definite recommend.

From the moment we arrived our party of 9 felt welcome and at home. Our (many) bags were brought to our rooms, which was a big help as there are no elevators in this mountainside retreat, while we enjoyed a drink on the terrace patio. With its breathtaking views of Naxos Bay and Mt Etna the patio is the primary gathering point for relaxing and dining while staying at this intimate villa / hotel conversion.

The rooms are clean, spacious, tastefully decorated and complete with all of the creature comforts one would expect in a higher end hotel. Our family of five stayed in one of the North (Messina coast) facing two room suites where an addtional single bed was added to accomodate all of us. A rarity in many European hotels.

Having never visited Taormina we especially appreciated the advice, referrals and arrangements for the private beaches, Mt Etna tour, free shuttle into town and directions. Each member of the Staff took the time to fully answer our questions and offer assistance. A refreshing departure from the typical resort concierge.

The attentive service continued, even after our departure, as they helped me coordinate a shipment of personal goods to the US.

Overall we were very pleased with our stay at Villa Ducale and would recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable and well run hotel in a beautiful locale.

We stayed at Villa Ducale in June for my partner's 40th birthday.

I chose Villa Ducale from the stunning reviews on trip advisor, and was not disappointed in any way. There is nothing more I can add to these reviews. The reservation service, welcome, our room, customer service during our stay, shuttles, transfer to the airport exceeded our expectations. We had a completely stress free stay.

We stayed seven nights and could have stayed much longer. Our room was a double classic, room 14, we loved the sicilian tiles and the brick wall behind the bed. The bathroom was impeccably clean and spacious.

Our favourite part of the day was sitting with a glass of wine on the terrace (overlooking Mount Etna), while we waited for the shuttle to town. The pre-dinner nibbles provided were excellent.

Recommendations for restaurants: our favourite was LeNaumachie in Taormina.

Many thanks to the staff of Villa Ducale for making my partner's 40th birthday so memorable. I spent one year planning this trip, as I wanted the perfect location/hotel, and I found it! We will be back!

Having previously stayed in Taormina on two other occasions, we decided to revisit the area and stayed at the Villa Ducale for a week after seeing the large number of positive views from Trip Advisor.

On arrival, we were requested to sit on the terrace to look at Mount Etna. With glasses of prosecco in hand and Luca describing the hotel and local area, it was a perfect start to our stay. We had requested Room 10 which overlooks Mount Etna and part of Taormina with views of the towns of Riposto and Acireale in the distance. We also had the choice of two balconies. The air conditioning in the room was good and also quiet which is just as important. The bed was very comfortable and the room also had a large bathroom with a good shower.

Whereas our previous hotels were in the town, the Villa Ducale is about 5-10 minute bus ride from the town centre. We were initially concerned that the hotel may be a bit far out of town but the Ducale offers a courtesy bus at different times during the day which takes guests to the centre of Taormina and also to the beach. Another option to access Taormina is to either walk down the four hundred or so steps from the Madonna Rocca, which affords great views of another part of Taormina including the Greek Theatre, or another series of steps which were closer to the hotel and eventually led down to Porta Messina where the main street of Taormina (Corso Umberto) begins. Both were an easy 15 minute walk down with the Madonna Rocca stairs taking about 25 minutes to climb back up. Alternatively, if you do not feel like walking back to the hotel or cannot fit your schedule in with the hotel bus, a 1.50 Euro fare from Porta Messina on the Castelmola bus drops you right at the hotel.

The Ducale’s breakfast is excellent with a good choice of food to suit all tastes. We also had a light meal at the hotel which was also very good. The prices from the mini bar in the room were also quite reasonable. We ate out most evenings and there are a good range of restaurants, trattorias and pizzerias in the town. We would also recommend Il Saraceno which is close to the hotel and has great views of Etna. The view, from one of our balconies, of Etna at night with the lava visibly flowing down the side of the volcano is a sight we will not forget.

We found every one of the hotel staff to be very helpful and the staff are a credit to the hotel. We have no hesitation in recommending the Villa Ducale.
