The centre of Florence is becoming vastly overcrowded these days but there are a number of spots very close to the main thoroughfares (which seem now to be full of crocodiles from cruise-ship) where you can get a little peace and quiet (relatively speaking) and this is one such place. They serve good coffee and a wonderful selection of pastries and it became our regular place for a coffee break on a recent trip to Florence.

Great little place which doubles as a bakery with its own oven. Restaurant food and drinks are all produced by them. Top service and top authentic food. One of my favourites ever.

We go to Florence several times a year for work. Almost every time, we would go to Verrazzano for nibbles and wine in the early evening purely because of its great location.

Never again.

Our group was charged for SEVERAL dishes we had neither ordered nor received. When this was raised in a very friendly way with the not-so-gentle man who had served us, he immediately became extremely defensive.

Miscalculations happen, but most places would just apologise and move on. Instead, this man started fiercely arguing about it and insisted we were wrong. We were shocked.

Perhaps because the man did not realise I understood Italian, he also felt free to say something very unkind about AMERICANS, which I chose to ignore; as it happens, no one in the group was American, but that should not have been relevant to our discussion.

Lucky for us, the staff had not bothered to clean the numerous plates on our table, so we were able to show that the bill was wildly exaggerated simply by counting the number of plates around us!

Even after he was PROVEN wrong, the man did not apologise. He did, however, begrudgingly agree that we owed ONE HALF of the amount on the bill, which we paid and left.

Italian friends have said we should have called the police (apparently this is an offence in Italy). But why should we have dealt with even more stress for wanting to simply sit down and enjoy ourselves?

We will go back to Florence again and again. We will not, however, ever go back to Verrazzano.

But if you are charmed by the surroundings and venture inside, make sure your bill is not wildly padded. If it is, you may wish to simply ignore being ripped off, overpay and spare yourself considerable stress and insults.

Thanks for the time you spent writing this note. We are very sorry and surprised by your report. What I can read is completely distant from our standards and the quality of our usual service to our customers and if you've been in our place in the past you know what I mean. We would be grateful if you could help us understand better what really happened to you. You can contact us by private mail.
We can not wait to have you again in order to show you the real sense of our welcome.

We had a wonderful dinner there and Salvatore was terrific. Many courses and tasted a few different wines from the Verrazzano Winery. Make reservations. This is a small and not to be missed restaurant.
Amazing pastries if you just stop in.

This was a great restaurant to step into for lunch on a weekday in late May. We arrived around 12:30 and had our choice of seats but by 12:45 it was packed. The table service area is a small area where you can sit down with a quaint atmosphere.

The waiter was very friendly and made suggestions on what we should order and which wines to drink. In all we had four glasses of wine, bread, pecorino e noci, insalata caprese, piatto cantinetta, and 3 espressos for 64 EUR/$71.75. The food was very good and I especially liked the white/bianca vinaigrette they served at the table. The caprese was very fresh and tasty, as would be expected in the summer months.

Verrazzano is an estate in the Chianti region that has their own wines as well as vinaigrette, oil and other fresh products. Everything we tried was very good quality and fresh. This a great restaurant to sit, enjoy some good food and a nice ambiance.
