We had one of our best Michelin starred dining experiences when we visited Il Palagio for our wedding anniversary.
The restaurant is in the Four Seasons hotel which is on the edge of central Florence so you may need to get a taxi depending on where you are staying. However the building itself which I think is a restored former convent is very interesting and has clearly had a huge amount of money spent on it. There is a very smart but comfortable hotel bar where we had a drink before dinner.
From the moment we arrived at the hotel, from the doormen who opened the taxi doors, the bar manager who swept our coats off to the restaurant and the restaurant staff we had probably the best combination of super efficient but genuinely friendly service I have experienced.
The restaurant is quite formal but not stuffy and would be lovely in summer I would imagine. We had chosen Il Palagio in part because they had a proper five course vegetarian tasting menu which is not always usual in Italy. The food, especially the vegetarian menu, was excellent with unusual and interesting dishes that didn't just rely on expensive ingredients such as truffle. (The bread and olive oil is also very special and is treated with great reverence). The portions are not huge so we were able to manage the extra anniversary desert they surprised us with, though were defeated by the petit fours.
There is a suggested wine pairing for each course but we restricted ourselves to a couple of glasses each suggested by the sommelier. The wine is expensive, the food reasonable value (though still expensive!) for the quality and the overall experience.
Oh and we got an extra cake to take away.
