Owner description: San Gimignano's main square has the town's 13th-century cistern, or well, in the center surrounded by some of the town's majestic towers.

Lovely square with a well in the middle( hence the name cisterna) with steps up that is handy to sit on to enjoy your gelato. There are two gelateria in the square; an award winner and the best in the world. The award winner had the biggest queue but I tried both ( well you have to really for research purposes) and found very little difference between them and , yes, they are the best gelato you will ever taste.
There are some nice cafes selling food and drink around the square.

Lovely and interesting part of San Gimignano. There was a great medieval parade on one day we were there and a market with traditional goods. Good cafes and a superb Italian ice-cream shop. In the Summer months however, there are hundreds of tourists arriving on organised tours by coach, This is the one downside of a popular and famous place. We were independent travellers but tourists nevertheless ourselves on our second stay in the town.

I was staying in Siena but visiting this town was on my list that I went twice. I loved it in the day as at night. So peaceful to walk around, places to have a meal or gelato.

The last time that we were there is was in August about 6 years ago and we had been living in Lucca, Italy for 4 months by then. It was quite hot, as the summer usually is in Tuscany, and we were with friends. San Gimignano is a medieval town that used to have 90 towers and now only has about 7 to 9 left. During the time of plagues the aristocracy were literally above the dying and disease on the ground. Towers were often connected and you could travel from one to another. They eventually lost fashion and didn't really protect the inhabitants from the plagues. In the Piazza della Cisterna there is a several hundred year old cistern that still functions. Just above the cistern there are two FABULOUS gelaterias, one on the end and the other up the block a few businesses. They have unusual flavors like passion fruit and others. There is also a basement restaurant on a parallel side street where you have to walk down a few steps. The wife is an awarding winning chef and her husband is the greeter. Exquisite l food and wonderful local wines. a delicious combo!!

San Gigmignano is a walled hilltop town, with gorgeous views all around. The heart of it is this large piazza surrounded by ancient buildings which now house shops, restaurants and in particular, what is touted to be one of the best gelato shops in Tuscany! Definitely a place to linger and soak up the atmosphere. Sunset is an especially beautiful time to be there.
