Mount Subasio park is well worth visiting to get an experience of the natural world around Assisi and the small towns and villages that are within the park. There's history and ancient hill villages, chasms, thick forests and dry scrubland.
There are some excellent b and b's, agriturismo and hotels that can make a stay in the park a great pleasure. If you are planning to visit do get hold of a good map - there are many national paths in the park. The terrain can be tough- steep, rocky and treacherous and there is the slim possibility of encountering scorpions or snakes. You'll need good boots, I've just returned from a walking holiday in the park and never wore my walking sandals. Do take a good hat- perhaps not so necessary in the later autumn, but during our visit the sun was still strong! And make sure you have plenty of water. You can take water from fountains, but there really aren't many shops outside of the towns.
