We were walking back to Hotel Berti from the Piazza del Comune and passed several gelaterie on Via San Francesco. Since it was after dark, not all were open but we went into one of the last before the end of the street. We asked the price of a small gelato cone. €3, we were told. We balked at the price and started to leave. The lady said her gelato was top quality and if we wanted to, we could find "porcheria" elsewhere for a cheaper price. We continued on and turned down Piaggia San Pietro, thinking there were no more gelaterie before we reached the hotel. Then we spotted F & M Café. The gelato selection is limited, but I found a flavor I had never seen, Pesca e arancia, peach and orange. It was fabulous with large chunks of fruit mixed in and a generous cone was €2.50, not cheap, but well worth it and within the range of most in Italy. I went back for a fragola, strawberry, the next afternoon just before we caught the bus for Rome. Some of the best gelato I have had in Italy and we have been coming here almost every summer since the early 70's.
