We were visiting Gubbio on market day and didn't fancy the slightly touristy restaurants in the centre. Il Castellaccio was recommended to us by another restaurant which was closed on Tuesdays. We set off and about 20 mins drive out of Gubbio towards Perugia down to the plains was Il Castellaccio situated on the left hand side of the road (easy to fly past !). Sit inside if you must, but despite being beside the road, the views of the Umbrian countryside are spectacular. Expecting little on a hot day at 2pm we settled on the set menu at 15€ each for three courses water and coffee!! Excellent value for what turned out to be a delicious meal. The seafood orecchiette had prawns, vongole, mussels and squid, I had minestrone which was simple but tasty. Then roast goose and very nice roast polpettone for me with gratinate melanzane, - lovely, particularly the goose. service was excellent and the waiters both charming and friendly.
We had an excellent bottle of slightly frizzante Verdicchio wine for 7€ and a very nice off menu panna cotta with extremely fresh and rich cream. With a final bill of €40 it was extremely good value for money and a delicious meal!
