We booked a room at Ameron Flora for our weekend in Lucerne. The location is perfect, a short skip from the main train station, and a mere 50m walk or so to the river where you can see the Jesuit church, Kappelbrucke and all the other beautiful sights of Lucerne.
We arrived early in the morning and stopped by the hotel to ask if we could drop our bags off but the staff member checked us in promptly as there was a room already available. On top of that, we were surprised to find we'd been upgraded. I always think it's nice when a hotel will upgrade you for free if they have better rooms available. Always a nice welcome touch. Super efficient service, perhaps lacking a little warmth though.
The rooms are a decent size, large window (ours overlooking a courtyard), we had a free mini bar with the upgraded room, a very welcome touch. My husband claimed the bed was the best he had slept on in a hotel. They also have a pillow menu with items such as tea, face mask, things that will help you have a great night's sleep. It was so quiet that we didn't hear the cleaning ladies in the morning in the corridor. All-in-all it was a great sleep. The bathroom had nice amenities, and you could call reception for any misc. items such as toothbrush etc if you needed them.
The area is absolutely safe even late at night, there are many restaurants around on all sides of the hotel, and convenience stores close by. By the way, if you have a pet, they are allowed in this hotel for a small additional fee. I didn't see any but it is nice to know.
The reason I have only given 4/5 is, on the last day upon check-out we paid the city tax (a small amount) which we always expected but I heard the concierge mumble something in Swiss German about using public transport. I looked it up later and found that from the 1st of January 2017, every guest staying in any hotel in Lucerne is supposed to be given a Lucerne Mobility Ticket which gives free access to public transport in the city (zone 10). It is effective for the duration of your stay and since it is given upon arrival, you can use your hotel accomodation confirmation print-out before check in if you need to use PT to get to your hotel. HOWEVER, we never received this 'mobility ticket'. Granted, we walked around everywhere and did not end up using public transport, but if you're taking a payment of a tax that is then used to partly subsidise a mobility ticket provided by the city for all your guests, you should give it to your guests. Now, I have read past reviews and found at least one other that noted they did not receive the free mobility ticket. So, this is disappointing that it isn't the first time. We've stayed in other Swiss cities that offer mobility tickets (Basel, Geneva, Lausanne) and they were very forthcoming about it and helpful in how to use it.
