Bolero is our last dinner of our 2 weeks Eastern Europe trip and we found the food is delicious for us. That was a perfect ending for our trip, we try their patios buffet and prawn-rice set. I personally feel their patio buffet is worth for the price. But the restaurant is quite crowded, lucky we still able to get a seat without reservations.

Lucky for us we were staying at the Hotel Cascada and this wonderful tapas bar/restaurant forms part of the hotel facilities and is very much open to non residents and residents a like. The same warm and friendly welcome awaits all. The tapas and excellent vinho de casa was just what we needed on our first evening in Lucerne. We were served by the delightful Roland who is the owner and very passionate about the hotel, restaurant, the service and the staff and his very own vineyard in Spain. Bolero has such an inviting atmosphere, equally suitable for couples and larger parties. It just works and we took friends there two days later and we had such an enjoyable relaxing evening. We are already looking forward to our next visit. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND you try this most excellent venue.

The service at Bolero was exceptional. We had a large party and they were very accommodating. There is a great selection/variety on the menu...again, something that is useful when considering the many tastes/preferences of a large group. A few of the tapas seemed a little lack-luster (i.e. Spanish tortilla), but that was simply in contrast to the other ones that were exceptional. I would say that 85% of what I tried while I was at Bolero was great.

It’s always interesting choosing to go eat at a restaurant whose latest reviews are literally all over the board from worst to first. That’s usually a really bad sign - inconsistency at best.

But hey, we’ve been in Italy and Eastern Europe for 6 week’s and simply could not do another pasta, pizza, schnitzel or goulash - so Spanish it was. Curiously, our last most expensive meal was Tapas at a Spanish joint in Vienna. Thought we would have learned.

We gave a 4, when a 3.5 would have been more accurate - strictly because we enjoyed Alessandro (our Southern Italian amico) as our server so much.

The quick rundown of our evening:

Made reservations; showed up on time to a maybe 20% full restaurant and - once we were not so warmly greeted - we were escorted to literally the furthest worst possible table in the restaurant - Literally, in a corner!!. “How about that one, we asked?” “No, reserved.” (thought that’s what we did?) “That one would work!” “No, sorry, reserved” (Aha - starting to get it now... ) NOT a great start; when we left - you guessed it - restaurant maybe, maybe 50% full; great way to treat tourists - NOT!

Caramelized onions and goat cheese app was yummy, but why not baked the (faux) goat cheese, too as it was the only cold item on an otherwise warm plate?; and this version of goat cheese was something less than creamy - more feta like in its consistency. Paella was tasty - we think more because we were starving. Our Barcelona friends may have sent it back with its green beans, rabbit and tomatoes, lack of olives and having been cooked elsewhere and presented in the paella pan. A bit on the greasy side also. But - flavorful and tasty. Worth $33-$37 per person....ummmm.... that’s for y’all to decide. Give me $75 USD and I could feed a dozen folks seafood paella, but I digress.

Our favorite moment of irony though is being at the foothills of the Alps and paying $3 per carafe for filtered tap water. That just will never ever sit well with Americans. Even our Canadian friends don’t charge for tap water .

Moral of the story is if you want decent Spanish food - go, set your expectations appropriately, ask for Alessandro, fight for a decent table, enjoy, over pay and leave full and with one memories.
