In times of fast food, modern copy cuisine and a some times incredible mix of undefinable dishes, it is a real blessing to once in a while find a place with a clearly defined concept.
The Old Swiss House in Lucerne is a true institution, existing since many years, owned by the Buholzer family. It needs curage, dedication and pride in once own doing, to last so many years and to believe in a concept.
Well, the Buholzer have over many years done exactly that. What a great expierince to be albe to travel into a world almost gone by.
We entered the restaurant at around six pm on the second X-Mas day, a day when most restaurants are closed. After visiting the Gurlitt exhibition in Berne and after a leisure drive to Lucerne we where given a warm welcome by the restaurants owner Hanny Buholzer and the manager Oliver Valio. The lovely, even do old decor of the place made us emediately feel comfortable. We where in for a memorable family dinner. The Irish smoked salmon, carved at the table by the maitre in very thin slices was delicately smoked in Switzerland by Curatly, a well known salmon producer. We then went for the famous escalope of veal prepared at the table. An incredible dish! A very thin slice of lean veal, breaded infront of your eyes and panfried in pure butter until crispy, served with thin noodles and bread crumbs and the friying butter. Aldo it sounds terribly fatening and heavy, it is only delicious and I dare say, not more caloric that many so often consumed fast food dishes of today. We thoutghly enjoyed our main cours and had space for crepe suzette for desert.
One other remarcable point to highlight is the wine list. It shows that the owners have since long been passioned about wine. There are wonderful discoveries to be made for Champagne and Bordeaux lovers. Exquisite old and young vintages at very affordable prizes.
We where very happy with ur family after X-Mas dinner but only recommend this restaurant to people with an open mind and the wish to be transported into a fairy land gone by.
