"Take A Holiday" the current exhibition at the Museum of Design (Museum fur Gestaltung – Schaudepot) combines two of my favorite loves – Design & Travel. Who doesn't love both.

The exhibition marks the 100th anniversary of Switzerland's tourism industry. This small exhibition showcases not only the beauty and magic of Switzerland, but the talented graphic designers who created the work. The bulk of the exibition is made up of travel posters, grouped thematically. Much of the imagery presents a very romantic view of travel from a by gone era. Other travel related pieces are also on display.

Perhaps the most fun item to see in the exhibition was a incredible Rube Goldberg type machine made up of iconic imagery related to travel in Switzerland, including videos. This contraption was so much fun, I watched it twice.

The price of entry was 8 CHF. I suspect this exhibition will appeal mainly to lovers of design and travel. The museum has a small gift shop and a couple of eateries can be found in the building. The museum can easily be reached by tram.

The former museum closed for renovation and supposedly the collection was moved to this location, but there is just one room of tourism displays. Yes they're nice, but not worth the entrance fee to see them. I believe this Museum would be better off offering free admission for this small exhibit to generate interest while the renovation is in process. As it is, it wasn't worth my time or expense to get there on the tram.

We went to great lengths to track down and travel to this museum, spending a total of over 50 francs for transportation and admittance for our group of 4. Prior to our visit I visited their website which says this:

"Museum für Gestaltung in the Toni-Areal-

The new location in the Toni-Areal, presents temporary exhibitions and brings together its four collections – Design, Graphics, Applied Art and Poster – with their 500'000 objects. For the first time the Museum für Gestaltung presents its collections to the public in the Schaudepot. Daily tours offer insights into this collection of international importance."

Imagine our disbelief to find that the real 'collection' displayed is ONE room of travel posters. That's it. And the person in charge told us it was OUR responsibility to visit the website and find this out. The problem is, they do not post this information, nor is it posted before you pay for admittance. No offer of a refund when we made an issue of the lack of honesty regarding the exhibits.

Absolutely shameful and disgraceful.

Dear Jean Geib-Ballon

We are sorry to hear that you were unhappy with your visit at our Museum. It’s true, at the moment we have only one exhibition “Take a Holiday!” (the room with the Swiss Tourism poster). This is the reason why we offer to all our visitors a reduced entrance of 8 CHF instead of 12 CHF.

The exhibition(s) and collection are two different things: The exhibition(s) are on our ground floor, at the moment as written before only “Take a Holiday!”. The collections - Design, Graphics, Applied Art and Poster – are located in our basement and can be explored during the whole year in guided tours – as written on our website. Further information you’ll find here:

We apologize for the inconvenience and we kindly ask you to contact us on welcome@museum-gestaltung.ch

It's expensive. For 12CHF you only get to see 2 tiny rooms. The information cards on the displays were in German.

The only place worth visiting was the rooftop garden. And it has nice Coffee Bistro.

Please give this place a miss.

The museum is part of the Zurich Arts School, which makes me jealous of the students. It hosts a series of exhibits at the same time, and is very spacious. The Swiss Tourism exhibition was brilliant. Posters and advertising from as far back as the 1930s can be seen, and it is beautiful. Art Deco pieces done to perfection hang from the roof, and the combination of artwork and photography make you realize how unbelievable Switzerland is as place to explore and enjoy. I would recommend anyone to go to this show.
