“Great location”
Reviewed 23 November 2017 for a stay in November 2017

This was the first experience with this apartment in Zurich.
The location is convenient and good to sleep for 5 pax.
Moreover, the kitchen is equipped for cooking.
Remember to buy trashbag to throw/clear your rubbish daily after cooking if possible to avoid the smell as Zurich is a clean city.
My family love the space of this apartment.
The only set back is there no lift but stairs up to 4 floor.
However, can take it as an exercise daily.

Management Response
23 Nov 2017
Hello
Thank you very much for your message and for taking your time to write us, we really appreciate that.
We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the Schmidgasse Apartments!
We are also glad to hear that you rated the lack of elevator as a daily exercise :) Unfortunately, we cannot do anything about that but try to inform our guests before that there will not be an elevator, so that they are prepared.
We would be pleased to welcome you again in one of our apartments.
Stephanie

“Good but not great”
Reviewed 12 July 2016 for a stay in July 2016

I agree with the other reviewers - it's in a great location in a charming building with exposed ceiling beams and glimpses out to the river and bustling (and traffic noisy) street life. Great to have a kitchen a washing machine and good wifi. Just know it's up 50 narrow stairs and you will bump your head if you're 5' 10 or taller. The double bed (with no bedside tables or lamps) is very comfortable for one but you will feel every movement of a partner and I spent the first night on the floor (too hot in the lounge room with only two working fans but happily it was cool enough last night for my husband to sleep on the sofa). Cute attic room for three teenagers but have to walk bent over.

“Worth Every Penny”
Reviewed 18 April 2016 for a stay in March 2016

This is one of the best rentals for the price I've gotten from tripadvisor. The apartment is located within easy walking distance to the main train station, restaurants, several grocery stores, and the river with many local sites. The apartment was clean and the beds were comfortable. There was plenty of room for my husband, grandson, and myself. I think it might be a bit crowded for 5 people if you planned to spend much time in the apartment. The kitchen was fairly well equipped, but could use a microwave People congregating in the street just outside the building were a bit noisy, however the bedrooms are located in the back of the apartment so there was no problem sleeping. The only draw back I could see for some people is that you must climb 4 flights of stairs to get to the apartment.

“A character-filled apartment in a great location.”
Reviewed 2 February 2016 for a stay in January 2016

We loved the apartment! Such a quirky space with loads of character that enhanced our Zurich experience. With sloping floors, narrow stairs and a loft bedroom, we definitely felt like we were somewhere special!
The check-in process was very easy & the staff were very friendly and helpful - they even helped to carry bags up the many flights of narrow, steep stairs!
The apartment had a combined sitting, dining and kitchen area, with bathroom and compact bedroom on one level, with a spacious open loft above the living area as the second 'bedroom'. This provided a very unique and character-filled apartment, with gorgeous views out over snow-topped roofs.
The kitchen was well equipped, and the addition of a washing machine was so incredibly handy!
The location is fantastic - there are so many restaurants and shops right at the doorstep & all the major sites of Zurich are within easy walking distance. The big Coop supermarket just up the road (about 5 minute walk) was easy to get to and very convenient.
Some tips for those who are looking to book:
If you have mobility issues, bear in mind that there are several flights of very steep and narrow stairs - however this provides the gorgeous views over the rooftops once you're up the top!
If traveling as a group of friends, or as two couples as we were, just be aware that the second bedroom is a spacious, but open loft above the living area - you'll be in for an intimate stay :-)
Being in such a convenient location for restaurants etc. means that nighttime can be noisy - the locals love to party by the sounds of when we stayed! Either join them or be prepared to pack some ear plugs just in case!
Extra pillows (enough for two per person) would have been great.
We loved our stay in Zurich & we loved our quirky apartment! It seemed to be great value for money in comparison to other accommodation options in the area. We would definitely stay again and would happily recommend it to friends.

“Great place for a family”
Reviewed 30 November 2015 for a stay in November 2015

My husband and I and our three children, ages 15, 14, and 10, stayed for six nights in the Schmidgasse III apartment. It was very much as shown in the photos: a fourth floor unit with a combination living room and kitchen, one bathroom, a master bedroom with a double bed, and an upstairs loft with a double bed and a twin bed. We parents slept in the master while all three kids bunked upstairs. This is in a fantastic location that is a five-minute walk from the big train station (Zurich "HB") and is a small street that connects the Limnatquai and the Neiderdorf areas. We either walked or took the tram around town and everything was easy to use and fun. Zurich is beautiful with lots of great museums and restaurants. In November, it is especially lovely with the many pop-up Christmas markets. We really enjoyed having a kitchen to cook in ourselves, and the big grocery trains Micros and Coop are likewise an easy walk.

Here are some of the many advantages:

1. Renting with HITrental is easy. You email them to arrange and pay a deposit in advance. When you arrive, call them - the number is on the front door buzzer, and seriously within one minute, Stephanie appeared to guide us to the apartment and show us around.

2. The kitchen is well-stocked with a full set of dishes, silverware, wine glasses, bakeware, a Nespresso-Compatible coffee machine (with some Nespresso packs - yeah! now we are addicted), corkscrew, dishwashing liquid, dishwashing tabs for the automatic dishwasher, and dish clothes. There is a steam oven and a regular oven that both use Celsius. Note that there is no microwave! There is a pretty good size refrigerator and freezer (not full American size, but much bigger than a dorm fridge).

3. Beds are comfortable. There is just one pillow and one quilt per person. If you like lots of pillows, bring some of your own.

4. Shower and faucets are easy to use. Dishwasher is easy to use (but a bit startling - when you turn on the power and close the door, it starts automatically - there is no additional "Start" button). We always had hot water except my daughter ran out the first night. There is no water heater that we could see in the unit so I guess the building itself has a central water tank.

5. Lots of windows make this very charming!

6. Good closet space in the master bedroom. But the upstairs loft just has two little nightstands.

7.Cool architectural features with wood beams throughout.

8, It does have a little European-style washer/dryer machine. We did not use it so I cannot comment on that though.

Here are some thing that might be negatives:

1. This unit is on the fourth floor and there is no elevator. There are four sets of stairs and they are pretty steep and narrow. We got our big suitcase up and down but it was a bit bumpy. I think a regular stroller would fit, but a double-wide stroller would certainly not. I would not have wanted to bring my kids here when they were little (say 1-6 years old) -- too easy to fall!

2. The upstairs loft likewise has a narrow staircase up to it and the ceiling is very slanted. Except for the very center, you have to crouch or you will hit your head.

3. The unit had a bit of a mildewy smell. I didn't see any mold or mildew and it wasn't a huge deal, but I noticed it.

4. The floors are not very straight, especially in the living room/kitchen which has a noticeable downhill slant.

5. There are a few restaurants and bars right next door so at night, the area can be pretty noisy with people talking and laughing and sometimes singing. Even on the fourth floor, the noise floats right up and it is kind of loud in the living room. But in the bedrooms the noise is nearly zero.

There are some special things to note: The apartment does come with linens and toilet paper and some tiny sample soaps and shampoo packets. It also has the special ZurichBag for trash that you must take out yourself to the central collection point about half a block away. I recommend remembering to buy an extra ZurichBag at Coop or Migros; we managed to cram all of ours into one bag but it was a near thing. Also, I brought a full size bar of soap and was glad I did because those little mini soaps would not work well in the shower, where the only storage is one of those metal holders that small things can slip through.
