We visited the Drents Museum for the first time to see the exhibition on American Realism. The exhibition is well organized and easy to view. The options in the gift shop are also good and varied. This was well worth the price of admission.

The museum is situated in the heart of Assen. It has a wide display of art and artifacts spanning thousands of years. It has an entire section dedicated to art scenes in Assen. I strongly recommend this museum. It is a must see when visiting Assen.

1. The Drents Museum punches well above its weight. Recent exhibitions include:
a) Peredvizhniki -Russian realism 1870-1900 (in 2017)
b)The American Dream (in conjunction with the Kunsthalle Emden in Germany) -a major exhibition of American art post-1945 (until 27 May 2018)
2. Planned exhibitions include:
a) The Art of Iran (June - November 2018) and
b) Images of Nubia (December 2018 - May 2019).
3. The Drents Museum is situated in an architectural gem: a renovated ancient building, with part of its exhibition space under a "roof" garden.
4. Assen is perfectly located to function as the centre of a multi-day cycling holiday. The province of Drenthe is known for its extensive network of cycle paths (all flat!).

The drents museum is not exactly next door for me. But it’s not far from Groningen, a lovely and lively city.

I went to see ‘the American dream’, after seeing the second part in Emden. Even though the quality of the works is similar, I preferred the setting in Emden. More space and a more quiet public (even though it was as crowded). The paintings lack a bit is space in Assen and the public was more noisy than in Germany.

Also I could not find a parking at the museum (maybe I missed the signage) and the spot I found was limited to 2 hours. A little annoying for such a small town.

Might go back for a great exhibition (I regret having missed the one on North Korea), but I the museum itself won’t be the reason.

They have a great exhibition on American realism from 1945 - 2017 until half of May 2018. Also an archeological exhibition of the province of Drente.
