Thanks to something called "snow", which Heathrow Aiport seems to have never dealt with before ever, I was recently stuck in Amsterdam after a business trip. Our boss kindly offered to put me and our colleagues up in a nice hotel rather than the hostel-grade one at the airport. We were lucky enough to get to stay at the Canal House, in a beautiful old canal house (no surprises there) on Keizersgracht in what I think is the nicest part of Amsterdam.
Overall impression is of a well-run, well-thought-through hotel staffed by people who actually like their job. Service was perfect - friendly but not over-familiar, helpful without being obsequious. The front desk checked us all in promptly, recommended a restaurant for dinner (De Belhamel, fantastic), and even arranged for us to have coffee ready for our super early wakeup to get back to the airport.
My room was called a "Better" room. It was pretty great actually. SIzeable, quality furnishings and finish, amazing huge deep tub and power shower. Thoughtful things like a box full of toothbrushes were a godsend for me, stuck with no change of clothes or toiletries.
Canal House missed five stars from me because my room, facing the canal at sidewalk level, let me hear every passer-by outside throughout the night - and there is no room service,
But overall a great place, and am already plotting to come back for a proper weekend.More
