Review of Red Light District

Red Light District
Ranked #22 of 611 things to do in Amsterdam

Attraction details
Fee: No
Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: This area in the oldest part of Amsterdam is known for the red neon windows that display barely-dressed prostitutes advertising their services; it's all perfectly acceptable as long as it stays inside this designated area of the city.

Fortunately the red light district is in an old area so the buildings are very interesting. You've heard all about it from fellow travellers so you just have to see it for yourself - once!

The Red Light District is infamous worldwide and is completely dead during the day but begins to come alive around 10pm. Although this is worth seeing and a novelty within itself (plus the pretty lights make great photos alongside the canals), we found it rather sad after all assessment because watching young lads leer at girls who look dead behind the eyes was awful to say the least. There was a clear differentiation between the ‘classy’ shop (if you can say that much) and the more downmarket stalls as the girls were better clothed and looked happier. The approach of the authorities to this area was a source of much amusement to us as the police strolled past on horses among the cannabis induced air and one even laughed at his mate who emerged from a prostitute ‘shop’. I honestly think it is worth coming here and is truly an experience you will remember but bear in mind the ethics behind it and you should be okay. This is effectively a place for young (and old, I guess) men to ogle women who undoubtedly have little choice in the matter to an extent where men are cheered when they emerge (as if they weren’t paying for it!). That being said, this is a tourist trap now and this is beneficial for it as it feels friendly, safe and busy, and it has to be said that this is less of an industry now, and more of a tourist attraction. Would recommend coming if you can stomach what’s really going on.

I was searching for a last minute tour and found a downloadable audio tour (it’s an app, the logo is red with the 3 XXX for Amsterdam). This turned out to be perfect for me and my 13 year old daughter. Easy to navigate, really well payed out and very authentic. It doesn’t gloss over anything- it’s very direct and honest. We started at dusk, and by the time we ended it was dark and felt very much like the red light district we’d heard about. My daughter is a mature young teen but there were some parts that maybe I would have preferred to keep from her. This was so much better than a guided tour, because we could easily blend in with the crowds and we could skip or fast forward or stop when we wanted. Highly recommend- I would do more of these!

We stayed in Amsterdam for a long weekend and walked through the district a few times a day. Very well managed area and not as rowdy as expected. We had a few drinks in a few places, not too expensive. Quirky and unique. A must do if visiting Amsterdam! Some great shopping places & cafes located just off the main street
