Just returned from a three night stay with a group of friends. We stayed in an 8 dorm room with a private bathroom. The staff were really friendly and were very welcoming.

The hostel is located in the heart of the red light district along a busy canal way. It's a good central location, however it did get very noisy at night until the early hours especially if you are located at the front of the building like we were. I'd recommend bringing ear plugs!

Rooms were basic and to an average standard. When we first got to our room, we did find a small razor blade on the table (no guesses as to what that was used for!). The shower was good and hot water was readily available. Towels were free from reception. The beds were comfy but the pillows were really uncomfortable and kept giving me a bad neck.

Downstairs there was a bar area which guests could use and breakfast was provided here in the morning. We didn't have the breakfast as the bar constantly stunk of weed which was pretty off-putting if you're eating so we ate elsewhere.

All in all The Bulldog was great if you're looking for a base and I would recommend to friends who are looking for basic and cheap accommodation.

Stayed for a few days at The Bulldog and had a great time. Staff were friendly and helpful from the receptionist to the bar staff, whilst the rooms were most definitely value for money. If you're looking for fun place to stay with everything you need to have a good time in Amsterdam look no further!

Heads up:

Don’t expect to stay in Amsterdam centre and have huge rooms as everything is extremely narrow in the city, roads, houses, shops, stairs you name it. If you like a lot of space in rooms stay outside the city and travel via trams into centre.

I could honestly not fault our stay one bit, we travelled as a group of 8. We each stayed in different rooms, some of us younger ones stayed in the dorm rooms, two stayed in a double room and three took a triple.

As we were not aware of the narrow theme throughout Amsterdam, the triple room was quite tight and one member was claustrophobic. We said this straight to the manager and he told her ‘if she wasn’t happy then he wasn’t happy’ and immediately rectified this for her. He put her in one of the bigger rooms. Which I think alone deserved a good review for the excellent staff and management.

The rooms has such nice beds you didn’t want to leave them, each of our rooms had en suites. The dorm room had lockers and the ordinary rooms had safes. The hotel had a bar downstairs which was literally like a living room you felt so comfortable and didn’t want to leave! The drink and food were entirely reasonably price, probably the cheapest place we found in Amsterdam. €5.50 for Grey Goose and €5.00 for Nachos!! Bargain, especially when they were really tasty!

There’s a shop right on the corner when you are stuck, however very expensive. Take a walk around the red light district to find a cheaper one if you’ve time. Next to the hotel is Cafe Mack which is another Bulldog bar and next to that is The Bulldog First Coffeeshop which is where you find the good stuff that you want to go to Amsterdam for!

Use taxis to and from clubs (unless you’re a big group) passed 2:30am it’s not a place for wandering around and girls do not wear skirts. Nobody in Amsterdam gets dressed up, jeans are everywhere. If you do I think you’ll see the reason why. Keep in mind most people around that area are tourists who are out of their mind as none of us are used to the good stuff!!!!

The location of the hotel is phenomenal, 2 minutes walk from red light district and 10 from amsterdam centraal station. We got a train to Amsterdam centraal station from the airport which was around €5.30 each way on platform 1 I believe. We then walked to the Bulldog from there. Google maps is your friend!! On the way back to the airport we availed of the Bulldog taxi prices. We got the bus for 7 which was €60 one way.

Without further ado, we will 110% be returning to Amsterdam and staying in the Bulldog. We will definitely be returning to ‘the living room of Amsterdam’.

Enjoy your trip to Amsterdam and stay safe, until next time!

I love the bulldog Café. It’s seriously a gym in Amsterdam. But the best part about the hotel is that not many people end up going into the café so it’s quite easy to find a place to smoke and have a nice hot coffee.
