Description: Food that carries you away, challenges and inspires. Always evoking curiosity as to what the next course will be. Food that re-awakens those long-forgotten memories, or creates new, unforgettable experiences. Food you experience together, discuss together, which connects you to others. The power of simple and pure, and with a deep respect for preparation and flavours. Always the unexpected surprise of the combinations, which are often created at the table itself. The art of omission, the greatest challenge of all. No-nonsense, perfect service, precisely as you would expect here.

This 2 Michelin star restaurant in the centre of Rotterdam offers menus but you can also order a la carte. We had a 5 course menu. Wines suggested by each course, a wine pairing, was included.
The restaurant isn’t very spacious and the chairs are big so you feel a little the lack of space. But the chairs are very comforatble to sit in.
The aperative isn’t included in the menu and they charge 8 euro for a glass of chardonnay. A little bit over the top.
They serve some amuses and some bread. You can choose your own pepper and salt from boxes which is very particular. But to be honest after trying 2 kinds of salt it’s difficult to taste the difference.
The first amuse was a little icecream and that was delicious. I don’t think anything else from the dinner could compare with this. The first course was celeriac in two versions with a vinaegrette dressing and a beurre blanc sauce. I personally think one of the dressings was enough. And that’s the experience throughout the dinner. Too much different ingrediënts and tastes in one dish and the different taste are strong by themselves. So it’s a little bit an over excess in everything. Even the service at the table is mostly done by two. And considering the lack of space it gives you sometimes a uncomfortable feeling.
But the quality of the dishes are good, the staff is very friendly and the wines are terrific. And the maître is in his restaurant to keep an eye on everything. And that’s important for this kind of restaurants.
I definitly would recommend it as an experience, but wouldn’t go twice.

I highly, highly recommend this restaurant. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was inviting and the food was an experience all of its own. The tasting menu allowed us to try so many wonderful creations that were all extremely tasty. There was not one course we would fault. The evening was topped off by a visit from the chef himself, just another indicator of how personal his food is to him and the joy it brings to share this with his guests. This place is worth treating yourself to!!

First, I'm not going to give a restaurant a poor rating just because it is expensive. That being said, as FG has two Michelin stars it should be excellent in food, service, and beauty of presentation if you are going to blow a normal month's food budget on a single meal. But it was not. Reading the other "poor" reviews I can validate that they reflect my experience. The biggest disappointment was the food. The restaurant is listed as offering vegetarian/vegan options and they have a special vegetarian menu. I thought that I would give this a try -- I was really looking forward to seeing what a Michelin two-star restaurant would do with a vegetable-only menu. I expected it to be outstanding, but it was not even good. I cook better flavored vegetables at home and can recommend restaurants not far away that will serve you excellent quality/flavor vegetable dishes at a tenth of the cost. IMHO the chef here has no clue how to cook or present tasty plant-based cuisine. I could say something better if the others in my party were impressed by the "normal" menu, but they equally complained that it was lacking. Too bad also that the wine pairings fell flat and that the service was unresponsive to any preferences like the overall pace of the meal -- a fundamental for a Michelin quality restaurant. And yes, they shouldn't be bumping my chair as they squeeze past. I thought that it was OK to offer a salt and pepper menu, which I actually enjoyed, but it does seem like a gimmick to substitute for true food quality. Picking your knife felt a little ridiculous especially with a vegetable menu and no explanation. None of the food flavors "popped" and it seemed as if presentation was supposed to be a substitute for great food. E.g., having popcorn at a Michelin star restaurant would be cool if you were impressed by the popcorn flavor. As well, having a dish topped with a cotton candy layer that dissolved might be cool if the dish below actually tasted great. All this was probably exacerbated by having gone to another Rotterdam two Michelin star restaurant the previous night that was totally awesome. FG just isn't in the same league.

In summary I will never go back to FG Rotterdam and cannot recommend it, unless maybe you live in Rotterdam and are wanting to be part of the "see and be seen" crowd. Take your huge food budget and book one of the other Michelin two-star restaurants in Rotterdam.

In all respects quality to expected of a two star Michelin restaurant including the matching prices. Some things were slightly overdone such a the offering of a salt box and also a block of salt on the table, personally I would have preferred more choices in the olive oil. The only negative is the view outside the restaurant which looks quite ugly, nothing they can do about it except moving to another location.

My wife and I enjoyed dinner on February 2, 2018. The service was impeccable, not over the top, not casual, just right. The food was a delight and the chef, François Geurds, is a very friendly and committed host. Highly recommended!
