Always happy to give somewhere new a go we decided to give this place a try.
We wish we hadn't bothered.
At first things were all good. On arrival we were told by the friendly waitress that we could sit wherever we liked. The room was almost empty with just three other tables in use.
So things seemed ok so far.
We were given the menu which was a mixture of Mexican and more traditional. Whilst we were choosing we were given a small plate of guacamole and chips which was nice and then another plate of cheese and tomatoes. Also fine.
We chose two starters and two main courses, a bottle of wine and a bottle of water.
Then the teething problems started to become apparent. There were no signs for the toilets anywhere, the toilet roll holders were empty and the toilet door lock wouldn't open properly.
The head waiter/manager came over to tell us the card machine wasn't working and we would have to pay by cash. Fortunately we had enough cash on us.
Then we waited for our starter......and waited, and waited. This isn't unusual in Belgium though, so we didn't think too much of it.
However, after a more than acceptable wait even for Antwerp standards, a different waitress appeared with two main courses!
We told her we had ordered starters. She shrugged, looked confused, walked away and then spoke to our original waitress who brought the main courses back over to us and said....... and I quote, "Well can you not just have this?" !!!! When we told her we would like the starters we had ordered she also shrugged and walked away (no apology) and then some sort of argument took place between the staff, who seemed to be blaming everyone but themselves for the error.
At this point we decided we'd had enough. We would pay for what we'd had, which was a bottle of wine we hadn't finished, and leave.
My husband went to the manager and told him this. The manager offered no apology. He continued to get embroiled in the waitresses argument whilst my husband waited for his change from the money he'd paid for the wine. When my husband said he wasn't bothered about who was to blame he just wanted his change so we could leave, (we were starving by now, it was getting late and we needed to eat) the manager slammed the change down on the bar without looking at my husband and carried on arguing with the staff. Again there was no attempt at an apology or any offer to try and put things right.
We left and went to Savage Lobster Restaurant a few yards away. Fab place, great service.
On the plus side the food we saw being brought to another table looked good and plentiful.
But the place itself is soulless and lacks any sort of atmosphere. Apart from some Mexican music in the background you may as well have been in a bland, mid range hotel restaurant.
It seems they have opened before they were really ready. They certainly need to work on the staff training and learn how to deal with customers when things go wrong. Maybe it will improve with time and experience. We'll leave that to someone else to discover because we certainly will not visit again.
