This was once the best hotel in Coimbra, nowadays it is in need of renovations. Still, it keeps a lot of the old charm, having old-style furniture with inlays and the breakfast room with crafted wood paneling. Some rooms have views of the Mondego river.

Room Tip: Choose rooms in tha back of the hotel if you are disturbed with street noise.

We had read mild complaints from other travellers about the rundown conditions here but this hotel was perfect for anyone looking for a kind of unique "old fashioned" European hotel experience. Our room was quite large with a beautiful view of the river. The decor was beautiful: old dark wood and tiles. The bathroom is really big and clean. The old elevator was fantastic. And all personnel are super friendly and helpful. Everything we hoped to see or do was a short walk away. I hope places like this don't get knocked down for glass cookie cutter hotels.

Room Tip: Having a view of the river was fantastic.

I wanted to love this hotel. It is a wonderful building - old, grand, dignified - and only steps from the train station, so very convenient. Near lots of restaurants and sights. Right on the river, and we had a balcony overlooking it so the view was lovely. Those are all terrific things. However, our room had two single beds that were short, hard, and very creaky. The room furniture was all dark brown. Although it seemed very clean, there was a musty smell. My husband thought it was like sleeping at summer camp. The downstairs rooms (we ate breakfast once, it wasn't included and we had better breakfasts at hotels where it was included) must once have been beautiful; but, like our room, the overall impression was of darkness and gloom. The man at the front desk who checked us in was rather gloomy, also (the man the next day was friendlier). I love old places; but old places need and deserve care. This place made me feel that they are proud of being threadbare and dingy. I recommend it for the price and the location, but not for the atmosphere.

Room Tip: A river-view balcony made up for the disappointing room.

The best part of this hotel is it's location, which runs parallel to the river and offers quick walks to all the highlights of Coimbra. Part Art Deco, Part unkempt, this historical hotel would have otherwise been magnificent, had her threadbare carpets and bent rickety beds been attended to. Furthermore, and unfortunately, tired staff offer halfhearted attempts to recommend restaurants etc. If an interesting and musty old hotel is your thing in the best part of town, then she's for you.

Room Tip: At the very least, choose the romantic room - it does have a special olde world appeal.

Pros: Great location, breakfast, and free parking across the street, inexpensive. Cons: no English TV (even tho ch 5 said BBC, no picture or sound), small, stiff beds. Mixed: I liked the style of the hotel, wife wanted something more modern. Charming elevator, bath ok. I'd stay here again, but she wouldn't.
