Grab your lunch and take it to go. Come to this small square that is well maintained and devoid of the crowds.

Wonderful triangular castle wall, some small shops and museums that I didn’t go in to, and beautiful art sculptures throughout.

The Citadel is a set of fortifications built between 1488 and 1648. Historically a defense structure and a palace for the royals. Today and what you will experience is a complex consisting of the roiginal citadel, a high end hotel, art galleries, restaurant and museum.

We loved walking around here making sense of the statues, visiting the art galleries whilst enjoying some good food and drinks.

Set within the grounds of the old fort, now a lovely hotel, is this restored residence of the President. As we were staying at the hotel it was an easy walk across the courtyard, For others a walk to the historic part. It is well worth the walk. We were shown around by Margaride, an excellent well informed guide. In fact on this tour we could call her our personal guide as were the only two. We were shown into the personal rooms of the President and also to the newer restored visitor's rooms. All beautifully presented.
My personal favourite part of the building was the long glass conservatory, restored from its 1930s origins and extended, it has magnificent views over the bay. There was also some beautiful original 1930s furniture.
A personal big Thank You to Margaride who made the visit so special.
There is a small shop at the entrance and the entrance fee a very resonable 3 euros.
