Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Seventeenth Century Palace placed in an ancient Quinta de Recreio (recreation farm) which includes a formal garden, an informal garden and woods. The exterior and interiors of the Palace are decorated with the largest and best collection of Portuguese seventeenth-century "azulejos" (decorative tiles) still in their original location known today. The gardens are decorated with fountains, statues and other constructions from the seventeenth century, which are refreshing and make the walk through the premises a continuous delight. Although this is an inhabited Palace still today, visitors are welcome to take guided tours of the inside and enjoy visiting some of the most beautiful rooms, the Library, the terrace with "azulejo" panels representing the Liberal Arts, and the Chapel. The fact that this is an inhabited living space is part of its very special atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a souvenir shop managed by the Association of the Friends of the Fronteira Palace.

I was lucky to arrive in the morning because there are only guided tours. The tours are every half hour from 10-12. Make sure you go in the morning. The palace is a bit of the beaten path but will worth it.

absolutely gorgeous palace. Beautiful gardens and azulejos. One of the nicest places in Lisboa. Chek the hours for visits inside. The transport to the palace is a bit dificult so we decided to take a taxi. from Chiado to the palace and it cost 9 euros. We asked the driver to come and pick us back so he did . It was well worthed.

It's a splendid building (though happy that I am not to pay for its maintenance), lush gardens with a pond with fish and turtles. One can relax here, walk around a bit, but the guided tours are in the mornings only. Pity, we would have liked to have a peak inside...

While not as oppulent as some of the Loir Valley chateaus, the palace (which is still lived in by the Marquises' family) and its gardens (which are under restoration) are unique and beatiful in their tattered condition. Worth the trip and the take the tour of the palace. Check the times as house tour is limited in number of times its given a day.

Really nice place to walk around and take pictures. The garden and the palace are quite impressive:) the visit of the inside is interesting but wouldn’t recommend it for small children
