Good To Know:
- Arrive at opening (9:30 AM) to skip the crowd
- Take an Uber there (€27 from downtown Lisbon)
- Take a TukTuk back (€5 per person), then an Uber from the bottom of the hill. Uber cannot get back to you when you’re up there unless you want to wait 25-35 minutes.
- The map has a QR code to a free guided tour (tour guide not required but could be beneficial)
- Bring your own food and drink in a backpack
- Bathrooms are at the shop on the ground floor level at the Castle and at the entrance gate
- Pick up a free map from the gift shop
- If you can walk uphill for 5-10 minutes, don’t take the bus. It’s a long line for the bus.
- If afraid of heights, don’t visit the castle wall. There are tight spaces with no hand railing.

Pros:
- Beautiful palace
- Neat history
- Good day trip
- Beautiful views

Cons:
- Lots of people from mid-morning and beyond
- Uphill walking can be a con if you’re not ready for it
- Bring a light sweater (a bit cold on the outside wall of the castle)

Thank Globe T

Not much is said in these reviews regarding the horseback riding at Pena park. I would never have know it even existed if not for the website, but it was so lovely! The communication was a little bit hard for scheduling, but the views were amazing, the horses were calm and very sweet and the guide did a great job telling us what we were seeing. The price was very reasonable (30 euros for 90 minutes and they have longer and shorter options as well).

It is walk only, but still quite interesting as you are walking up and down the mountain and can see many of the highlights of the park in a short time without hiking. There were some lovely views of the castle and of the surrounding area. It was a very enjoyable ride and I would recommend it to anyone with some riding experience. It was a great way to see the park in a short time.

Like many tourist places, this is totally spoiled by the tourists. There was a continuous 2 deep queue snaking through the building, frequent hold ups, no time to look at an object. And this was a Wednesday at the end of June.

Beautiful! We walked up to it from Sintra. Visited the palace. Very crowded. Held up by very slow moving visitors blocking the one way system of viewing . Had lunch on the terrace which was good value for money. Enjoyed walking through the park. Great views.

Visiting this Palace is surreal! It looks like something from an animated movie, or maybe even a designers cake! But someone live here.. and the opportunity to visit the bedrooms, study rooms, bathrooms, etc, is like living inside a fantasy for a little while, rather than thinking about it!
