I am slightly bemused by the number of outstanding reviews for this hotel. In our experience, my wife and I thought it good, but not great.
It is located in a residential area about a 20 minute walk into central Funchal, where you would need to go to find alternative restaurants or activities,
Our bedroom was light, airy, spacious and clean - as were most areas of the hotel.
The breakfast included a good selection on the buffet table, with hot food freshly cooked to order. Other than breakfast, we did not eat in the restaurant (the menu did not appeal) but we did eat in the bar and room service - the watercress soup and salads were particularly good. However, we don't understand why they refused to serve food in the bar after 6pm - but insisted on guests using room service instead (off the same bar menu). We heard this lead to several disgruntled customers and it really makes no sense.
The free, underground car park was a real bonus as parking can be a bit of a challenge.
Overall, the staff were polite and helpful - in particular Rosie, who deals with guest relations and gave us plenty of good advice as it was our first visit to Madeira.
Ultimately we were glad that we stayed here and would be happy to recommend the hotel but would suggest that other potential guests do their research thoroughly (don't just rely on Trip Advisor) before making their decision.

Thank you for submitting your review on Tripadvisor.

We are sorry that you did not find the Quintinha de São João as “outstanding” as other guests but are delighted that your ultimate experience was enjoyable and that you would be happy to recommend our hotel. We are aware of the fact that not everybody can always be of the same opinion but feel that prospective guests do use Tripadvisor as a guideline rather than “law”.

We do not serve food in the bar after 6pm because our main restaurant is open from 7pm. Should you have only required a snack or light meal, our restaurant would have been more than able to cater for this and we would have been happy to serve just a soup or omelet if that was what you wished for. Our Vasco da Gama Bar is a bar that serves snacks during the day and not a snack-bar serving drinks at night – this is the philosophy behind our decision not to serve food here after 6pm. We do, however, offer room service as an alternative for those not wishing to use our restaurant.

We are glad that you found our staff polite and helpful and that the information and advice you received was advantageous. I shall pass on your comments.

We hope that we will be able to have the pleasure of welcoming you back should you visit Madeira on a future occasion.

Yours sincerely

We spent three nights in the hotel. The room on the second floor was comfortably furnished and as advertised overlooked the gardens. The reception staff were friendly and efficient. The housekeeping was to a high standard and totally unobtrusive. The service in the bar was good.
The hotel is about 1.5km from the centre of Funchal. Walking into town was straightforward albeit some of the roads, in common with much of the island, have no pavements and are quite narrow. Madeira has pleny of gradients so we chose to come back via taxi, and these were always easy to find and about €4 from the town.

For the one evening meal we had in the hotel the food was excellent.

We had breakfast in the restaurant on all 3 mornings and the room layout is somewhat cramped (although I understand additional space has been created in the last year). The breakfast is a self service buffet with an optional cooked dish brought to the table. The food at breakfast was good. Unfortunately the service at breakfast was not up to the same high standard as the rest of our experience. There appeared to be a reluctance on the part of the three staff on duty to clear used crockery during the meal. This resulted in guests having to hold onto a used bowl whilst the staff served several other guests with a cooked breakfast, and only then on some occasions coming back to retrieve the dirty crockery. Woe betide any one who had used a knife to spread some butter and also wanted to eat a cooked meal - the hotel had lots of spare knifes but only ever placed one per person on the table. It is a shame to have to add this negative comment to what was otherwise a very enjoyable place to stay. But a little additional training of the staff would easily solve this issue.

Our thanks to you for writing on TripAdvisor for the Quintinha de São João. We appreciate your kind words and support.
.
We are indeed situated in the residential area and away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist zone or the centre of Funchal. Whilst enjoying the peace and tranquility of our gardens, the town seems a long way away but, as you so rightly say, it is easily accessible.

As far as your comments regarding service and crockery clearing in the restaurant at breakfast time is concerned, I shall certainly be looking into the situation. We are sorry that you encountered this.

We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Quintinha de São João on your next trip to Madeira.

Yours sincerely

Chose this hotel based on previous reviews and were not disappointed. High quality furnishings lots of comfortable areas for reading and we appreciated the indoor pool. The best thing was the staff who were really friendly and went out of their way to make sure our stay was comfortable and enjoyable. Hotel is about 10 minutes walk from Funchal and was a pleasant walk ,downhill through the park. Taxis were a good bet for the return journey! Found the restaurant very good quality -friendly service and good choice from the a la carte menu. Breakfasts had good range of fresh fruits, yogurts, cooked breakfasts croissants etc. Would definitely stay at quintinha Sao Joao again.

Stayed here with my 8 year old daughter for 4 nights and wish it could have be longer. Small and quiet hotel but with adequate facilities and a nice quiet swimming pool in a warm 'green house' on the roof. Our room was a very nice size and very nicely furnished, not a great view from the balcony but I guess someone has to face the back of the hotel and it wasnt expensive.

Location was good with peaceful gardens and little traffic noise. A 10 minute walk downhill into town which is a very nice stroll. If you want to get a taxi back there are plenty to be found.

The staff were fantastic. They made us feel especially welcome and were genuinely happy to help. Mind you, I could have said that of everyone we met in Maderia...
