My husband and I stayed for 7 nights here last week. We absolutely loved it.
The room was spacious and spotless, as was the bathroom.
I didn't want to stay in a huge, all mod con brand new hotel, personally, and this was exactly what we wanted - a hotel with an interesting past, funky 60s furniture, and a laid back vibe.
The breakfast is fairly basic but adequate.
The building is wonderful and is well covered in other reviews.
The swimming pool is an added bonus and a lovely place to sit at night and admire the astounding view.
I loved the staff - helpful and polite and cheery.
For me being a crazy cat lady, there was an added bonus of the stray cat who has been adopted by the hotel :)
We would definitely go again.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a sea view definitely.

Booked this hotel because of great reviews and the hotel photos looked stunning.
Opted for superior room with roof top balcony. Arrived but early but fortunately room was ready. Shown up to room and to be honest my initial response was of shock! Room big but very plain and far from superior ! Room very clean, but no tea/coffee making facilities and a very old small tv.
Actual hotel old and full of character unlike lots of these new plain hotels. Lots of wood, old pictures and interesting aspects to see which are probably original and nice to explore.
The rooftop balcony in our room was its saving grace. A stunning panoramic view of the city and hills was breathtaking. We sat here a lot and watched the sun set on many occasions!
The buffet breakfast is pretty poor. Given a plate with 1 butter, 2 bits of wafer thin ham and cheese. Then either fruit or an out of date yogurt! Plus a basket of bread/cake. The lady who serves is obviously over worked but really kind as she especially cooked me eggs on the bacon day (I’m vegetarian)! We got used to it but really not impressed with lack of choice or poor quality :(
They do offer a very small snack menu in the day but no where close to get a tea or coffee so be prepared with water etc from shop in town centre or you’ll end up thirsty!
Hotel about 6 mins from shops and up/down steep hill, mind you all of Madeira is pretty hilly! Central location but parking is sparse.
Over all, nice stay but I wouldn’t choose to stay here again. In its prime this was obviously a stunning hotel but now it just feels worn out and over due a lot of TLC and a little bit of modernisation (new tv and coffee making facilities and Wii fi in the room) would make this a much more comfortable stay.

This is a hotel with character, a far cry from the modern, impersonal hotels nearer the centre of town. My travelling companion had a health problem and the staff were really helpful; calling a doctor and helping him up the stairs. Nothing was too much trouble.
A comfortable bar area for a drink in the evening and a mosaic terrace with tables overlooking the coast. A lovely experience.

Initially we were a little unsure, but we grew to love this place! Built in the early 1900's and after being used for a few other things, it was first turned into a hotel in 1965. The decor and furnishings are quite obviously original from 1965 and its seriously cool.

There was a lounge area at the end of the hall on the floor our room was on, and it totally reminded me of Maxwell Smart and Agent 99's office in Get Smart. It also smelled of an old smoking lounge, which it probably was.

The terrace had great views, and we sat enjoying the views and a glass of wine in mid November as the weather was very mild. It was lovely.

The room was clean and adequate, and had a great view.

A once wonderful place in a superb position. Nice n cheap but you get what you pay for. We wouldn't let anywhere put us off but...
Flaking paint, dodgy wiring, we both woke up with bites most mornings. Breakfast only, no other meals available. Hot water for everyone at breakfast from one ordinary kettle! One dish of hot food at breakfast, but when its gone that's it, otherwise some bread rolls, ham n cheese and cereals.
No air con., fans or heating.
Carpet in the room was probably originally pink, now grey!
Rooms dimly lit, smallest TV I've seen for years in the room.
Wilth not a lot of money this could be an amazing place, it obviously was once.
Outside area and pool area are good, nice place to sit on an evening.

Room Tip: Nice views, classic hotel, worn out 60s style
