“Worth a return visit”
Reviewed 13 March 2012

My husband and I recently stayed in this hotel for a week to celebrate my 2nd 25th!! We would definately return to this hotel again. It is a smaller hotel than others in the area, but conveniently situated away from the main town hotels which we prefered. The room was bright and airy with a lovely sea view and a balcony which was great for the afternoon sun. The whole of Madeira island is very hilly and the walk into Funchal town wasn't a five minute stroll. However, the hotel do offer a free mini-bus service which we took advantage of during our stay, and we found this to be brilliant. The staff are polite and friendly and to my surprise even made me a birthday cake which was gorgeous. The only slight negative of this hotel would be the cosmetic side i.e. cracked, plaster falling off on balcony etc which I am sure would be a constant repair job due to the weather conditions. The towels like many in other hotels had also seen better days. These are however very minor criticisms on what is a lovely clean hotel with very pleasant staff. If like us you prefer a smaller hotel that offers a more personal touch it is well worth the visit.

Room Tip: I believe all rooms have a sea view.

We had never visited Madeira and therefore our expectations were very hazy.

On our arrival at the Madeira Regency Cliff we were greeted by very friendly and helpful staff but asked to wait until 13.30pm for our room to be ready. however at the other end of the holiday we were given until 12 noon to vacate so we were more than happy to do this and spent the time looking around the hotel's location.

We were delighted to find our room gave us all we needed for a winter sun holiday; stunning sea views, very comfortable beds, a table and pretty wicker chairs ( not white plastic!) these could be used on the balcony or inside the room, attractive lighting, and excellent bathroom facilities.

In the main areas of the hotel we liked the boutique sofas and chairs and the dining room colours. We would need some help from the artist to explain his stunning paintings but they gave an overall appearance to the hotel of bright, clean lines and yet being very comfortable at the same time.

We decided to opt for dinner at the hotel during our 7 night stay and we were not disappointed, please keep the Chef, she is a gem, imagination and flair were used for the evening meals and we particularly liked all the menus and if you are a pudding lover they were very good, not too much sickly shaving cream type additions. Breakfasts included plenty of cereals, fruit, yoghurts, continental and cooked hot breakfast food, excellent selection of breads, pastries, and cakes to suit all, something for everyone.
The staff waiting at table and the bars were friendly and courteous and attentive, and all seem to speak a variety of languages.

Housekeeping was excellent and we came back to our room after days out and felt very relaxed and comfortable. It was peaceful and quiet at night and we slept well.

Before the end of the 7 days we decided that we will return to Madeira very soon and our first and perhaps only choice will be this hotel.

Room Tip: We chose a room on the 5th floor facing south and the sea but next time we would consider an upgra...

Well at long last I have taken a Saga holiday and stopped at the Regency Cliff . This hotel is in a lovely location it is relatively small compared with a lot in the area, but I found myself really glad I was not in the bigger hotels in the area.
As a single occupant I was delighted to have a spacious double room with a balcony with a sea view , there was water and fruit supplied on arrival. and tea and coffe making facilities in the room The staff were friendly and helpful the room was clean and comfortable. I only stopped bed and breakfast the choice for breakfast was excellent with lovely fresh fruit on offer each day and joy of joys there was a proper toaster!! and not one of those awfull machines that most hotels seem to have. The hotel also has free WiFi so if you want to keep up to date with e-mails you can. I would recommend this hotelit is one of the nicest i,ve stopped in for a long time Thank you for a super time

We returned to the Regency Cliff once again in the middle of February and had an excellent week’s stay.
On the basis of our recommendation we brought with us another couple of friends and my sister and her husband. Unfortunately my sister had had to have quite a major back operation only a month before our visit, so it was touch and go whether she would be able to manage the trip.
In the event all went well. The hotel staff were especially helpful and pleasant throughout our visit to the extent of lending us an excellent wheelchair for the week which made a huge difference to our holiday.
We were thoughtfully allocated the same very comfortable and well-appointed superior room as on our previous visit, and it was especially pleasing to note that our previous relatively minor criticisms had been sorted out: specifically, paintwork had been improved and the Wi-Fi signal was much better. We only ate in the hotel once - on the evening when the hotel organised a package including return coach to go into town for the Carnival procession preceded by dinner and it was fine.
Special thanks to Miguel for arranging a daily parking slot for the rather large minibus which we used to travel around the island and to get to various levada walks. Breakfasts were good – sometimes there was a temporary gap in topping up the hot buffet at busy times but this rarely lasted long and the replacement food was freshly cooked. Housekeeping was excellent – our rooms were made up to a very high standard in timely fashion each day. We swam in the indoor pool each day before breakfast and enjoyed the sauna too.
In a previous review I wrote that this hotel was very good but that it could be even better: on the basis of our most recent visit it certainly is better and I have no hesitation in recommending The Regency Cliff.
If you are on your own, the hotel restaurant is probably fine and the food seemed to have improved since last year. They offer an attractively priced multiple dinners package. Nevertheless the place rather lacks atmosphere in the evening – tables are rather crammed together and anyway we like variety and prefer to explore.
Once again we enjoyed eating out at the very modest Almofariz opposite, forgot that Monumental just down the road delivers more in quantity than it does in quality, and will return to Armazen do Sal where we had an excellent Valentine’s meal, Dos Combatentes which was a great find – excellent food at modest prices and the best meal of our holiday was at Restaurante Do Forte where the €35 set menu including wine is terrific quality and value. (Waiting staff seemed a bit serious – perhaps anyone would be serving a €300 bottle of wine at a nearby table, but eventually we got them to raise a smile!)
Some of our party completed 12km levada walks, others were incapacitated and could hardly put one foot in front of another: our major disappointment was not being able to eat breakfast on the outside terrace because of the weather. Nevertheless, we all had an excellent holiday and we’ll hope to return again to the hotel next year when hopefully the weather will be warmer like it was last year (hardly the fault of the hotel).
Bravo, Regency Cliff!

Room Tip: Romms on floors 2-4 are probably best

The suite we had was exceptionally well furnished, decorated and maintained with a superb view over the sea and cliff area /lido below. The hotel has six floors served by two lifts and although the hotel was at full capacity there was rarely any waiting time even at meal times. Staff were very helpful and efficient both in the restaurant and suite. The restaurant was at times unable to cope with the number of guests especially with cooler weather preventing the use of outside terrace tables. Dinner was usually good but with theme nights and carnival nights eating out was sometimes the best option.( try O Chef a short distance from the hotel with good grilled meats) Breakfast is plentiful re fruit and cereals but the hot dishes are disappointing particularly the bacon and egg. Empty hot dish containers not refilled very quickly resulting in wait or go without.Overall apart from these minor things if we were to go back to Madeira we would certainly return to this Hotel
