The temple is located at the site where River Ganga descended to the earth from Heaven. Lord Shiva took Ganga in his hairs at this site. The temple is a small temple, very well maintained and dedicated to Ganga Maa Devi. There is the area of the temple where King Bhagirath had meditated and performed penance to get Ganga to earth. River Bhagirath runs close by.

It is traditional Hindu pilgrimage . As I went there alone it wasn't very difficult to reach there. Roads are in very bad condition BRO is working on it . You can enjoy the beauty of nature all over the way.
When you traveling to gangotri you must visit other places as well.
Gomukh, you will find Mt. Shivling via Tapovan track and it is the most difficult part of the track. As I visit these places I feel blessed in mighty himalaya

We started early from Harsil to go to Gangotri , 40 odd kms distance. In the peak tourist season ,always advisable to start and reach early otherwise it's too crowded for comfort ! Ganga is not merely a river but a lifeline for India . How the people started worshipping a river is a mystery but yes the principle is sound . Can equate Ganga with the Nile in Egypt and the Mekong in China sub region ,not sure if these rivers are worshipped as much as in India. The main point of interest they say is Gomukh ,a trek of 14 k and further up to Tapovan @4000 m

Its 1 of the 4 shama for hindus n it's temple is very simple situated next to bhagirathi river. Temple also has bhagirathi shila where rishi bhagirathi is believed to have done prayers for ganga to come on earth..

Evening arti at ganga ghat n then in main temple is very nice...

I went in Oct so it wasnt crowded n I wandered within the temple premises n sat at river for hours reading book during sun time.

Temple is very simple for its importance in hindu way of life.

Gangotri is among the four dhams of uttarakhand. Comes second in order sequence to do proper chardham yatra. It comes in uttarkashi region and approx 100 kms from uttarkashi. Temple in white marble looks very beautiful. One can reach easily to temple by road. Need to walk for 5 mins from parking lot to reach temple area. Just beside of temple, there is a way to reach bhagirathi river bank. Pilgrims used to bath there before entering in temple. Very cold water , as it comes from gangotri glaciers.
There are 2 ways to do darshan, by standing in normal dashan Q, other is in VIP Q. For VIP darshan, one need to take the receipt after donation. Counter is on the left side of temple.
Government runs buses till gangotri from uttarkashi, haridwar/dehradoon.
A divine experience and must visit.
