We had visited Nikolas Taverna during a previous family holiday back in 2009, when we hired a motorboat for the day, so arrived and departed this restaurant by boat. We have always kept fond memories of that lovely day, so on our return to the island with my now grown up sons, and this time also with one of their girlfriends and my sister, we decided we should return. We had read that Taverna Nikolas would provide a boat taxi, so my other half rang on the day and explained that we were renting a villa close to Yaliskari Bay and asked if they would be able to collect us from there for dinner around 7.30pm as we had read this somewhere. The guy who answered the phone said of course, and agreed we would be collected around 7.35pm. By 7.45pm there was no sign of a boat, so she called the restaurant. The lady who answered said the boat would be with us within 10 minutes max. At about 8pm the boat arrived, and the captain told us very abruptly to hurry up and rushed us on saying he didn’t have time. We explained that we had expected him at 7.35pm and in reply he simply told us that he should not be picking up from Yaliskari. When we got to the jetty at Nikolas he then told us he would not be taking us back as it was too dangerous in the dark. We asked what we should therefore do and he just shrugged his shoulders and didn’t care less. We therefore told the manager who greeted us (it may have been Nikolas himself) what had happened and he said he would sort it out.
We then had our starters and main courses which were nice. My fiance’s mixed fried fish starter and my whole fish main were particularly good (see photos). Two others in our party enjoyed a mixed meat casserole dish. As our main course plates were cleared we were told to be ready to leave in 10mins and that the manager would go on the boat to help the captain, but they needed to leave before it got too dark to navigate Yaliskari Bay as there are no lights there. We therefore weren’t offered desserts or coffee.
We returned to Yaliskari safely by boat and were grateful for the manager’s help. We appreciated the safety concerns, but the boat captain's attitude was not good. However the restaurant should never had agreed to take us from Yaliskari in the first place. What the restaurant manager told us was that they used to have their own boat for the restaurant, but now it was an independent water taxi so things had changed. Do bear this in mind if you are looking to use the water taxi and double check they really are happy to collect you from anywhere other than Kalami beach – and return you too! It’s a lovely way to travel, but we didn’t get to enjoy it properly given the circumstances. Perhaps we would also have enjoyed our meal there more without these concerns but it didn't live up to our expectations following our previous visit.

This restaurant offers a more traditional low key Greek atsmophere compared to Toula's and Taverna Agni, but is far cheaper than the other two restaurants. The food is very good and the service too. Do take time to read Nikolas's family history booklet, it is an informative fascinating read. A nice little spot to have drinks too.

This is the more traditional of the three main restaurants in the bay. We did have a very good meal one lunchtime and the staff were very friendly and attentive. It probably caters more for the cost conscious than the other two restaurants in the bay. It was a bit noisy as a result of some inconsiderate Brits for a leisurely lunch time affair.

Although we only ate here once had we been longer on the island we would have probably visited it again. It is also convenient for just having a drink.

We holidayed in Kalami from June 15th - 22nd. We used the free water taxi to transport us to Agni bay which we arranged beforehand in Kalami village.
We thought Nikolas was the best taverna in the Kalami area that we had dined at and visited there several times. This was our third visit to Kalami so we have eaten there many times before anyway. We knew what to expect foodwise and were not disappointed. We felt it was still delicious traditionally cooked greek food at its best - at very reasonable prices. The boat ride added to the experience. The beach front setting was/is very picturesque.
We were made to feel welcome from the very start and the owner always remembered to come over to us to say thank you and to shake our hands. He did this even when the Taverna was very busy which we appreciated. On the first occasion I had fried squid cooked to absolute perfection with village potatoes and a nice bottle of Retsina. Subsequent visits included pork souvlaki, kleftico, feta cheese and tenderly cooked lamb cooked up with more delicious village potatoes (my fave) and village sausages.....and more Retsina. Starters included Tsatziki, Taramasalata - easily soaked up with chunks of delicious bread. We only had dessert (delicious ice cream) on one occasion as the meals were quite substantial. All our meals were presented and served very well - generous portions, beautifully cooked and very tasty. The service was friendly as was the general atmosphere created in the taverna. No rush - leisurely greek time - perfect.
We've eaten excellent food in many Tavernas over many years and throughout all of the Greek islands; Taverna Nikolas ranks up there with the best of them in our humble opinion. And in such a picturesque setting too. And all with complimentary liqueur too.
To finish : As per the title - Fabulous traditionally cooked Greek food in a traditional Greek Taverna which is just as it should be.

Sitting in a very pretty cove, we were lucky enough to have a table right by the beach, an excellent view. It's a busy place, and I feared we would be in for a long wait, but the service was quick and friendly. Your usual Greek fare, but definitely a cut above your normal taverna. Excellent deep fried courgettes, tasty lamb. A good night out.
