We had visited Nikolas Taverna during a previous family holiday back in 2009, when we hired a motorboat for the day, so arrived and departed this restaurant by boat. We have always kept fond memories of that lovely day, so on our return to the island with my now grown up sons, and this time also with one of their girlfriends and my sister, we decided we should return. We had read that Taverna Nikolas would provide a boat taxi, so my other half rang on the day and explained that we were renting a villa close to Yaliskari Bay and asked if they would be able to collect us from there for dinner around 7.30pm as we had read this somewhere. The guy who answered the phone said of course, and agreed we would be collected around 7.35pm. By 7.45pm there was no sign of a boat, so she called the restaurant. The lady who answered said the boat would be with us within 10 minutes max. At about 8pm the boat arrived, and the captain told us very abruptly to hurry up and rushed us on saying he didn’t have time. We explained that we had expected him at 7.35pm and in reply he simply told us that he should not be picking up from Yaliskari. When we got to the jetty at Nikolas he then told us he would not be taking us back as it was too dangerous in the dark. We asked what we should therefore do and he just shrugged his shoulders and didn’t care less. We therefore told the manager who greeted us (it may have been Nikolas himself) what had happened and he said he would sort it out.
We then had our starters and main courses which were nice. My fiance’s mixed fried fish starter and my whole fish main were particularly good (see photos). Two others in our party enjoyed a mixed meat casserole dish. As our main course plates were cleared we were told to be ready to leave in 10mins and that the manager would go on the boat to help the captain, but they needed to leave before it got too dark to navigate Yaliskari Bay as there are no lights there. We therefore weren’t offered desserts or coffee.
We returned to Yaliskari safely by boat and were grateful for the manager’s help. We appreciated the safety concerns, but the boat captain's attitude was not good. However the restaurant should never had agreed to take us from Yaliskari in the first place. What the restaurant manager told us was that they used to have their own boat for the restaurant, but now it was an independent water taxi so things had changed. Do bear this in mind if you are looking to use the water taxi and double check they really are happy to collect you from anywhere other than Kalami beach – and return you too! It’s a lovely way to travel, but we didn’t get to enjoy it properly given the circumstances. Perhaps we would also have enjoyed our meal there more without these concerns but it didn't live up to our expectations following our previous visit.
