Mount Pelion was a total surprise for me. The mountain is majestic, covered by huge sweet chestnut and plane trees, with apple and pear trees further down and, at sea level, olive groves which stretch right down to the water. At the top there is a ski resort with an unbeatable view of the Pagasitic Gulf on one side and the beautiful, blue Aegean on the other.

Things not to miss - swimming in the the sea at Kala Nera on the west side of the mountain when the sun is setting, closely followed by swimming in the sea at Mylopotamos Beach on the east side of the mountain when the sun is rising. Sampling cheese pies from a local bakery, eating fish at a fish taverna but best of all visiting the tucked away square in the mountain village of Tsagarada. The square is slightly off the main road round the mountain and has the oldest plane tree you'll ever see. There's also a hotel across the square from the plane tree which has an excellent restaurant.

Mount Pelion offer the traveller everything imaginable. The area has astounding natural beauty, infinite variety and is suitable for visiting all year round. In the summer its beaches rival the very best in Greece, while at the same time it's possible to escape to the cool shade of the mountain for walks or many other activities. Pelion offers everything from skiing to canyoning,, watersports to cycling, horseriding to windsurfing, however the region is still relatively unknown even to the Greek people! Pelion is easily accessible without going on a sea ferry, the accomodation is reasonably priced and the local food is fantastic. You will need your own transport, though, but roads are quite good. Pelion is an all-year round destination with plenty of things to see and do, plus the region has a long interesting history with many beautiful old villages.
