I visit Pelion every year. It is a hidden gem in Greece. It is not easy to get to which is why it retains so much of its authentic character. You will feel like you have stepped back in time visiting the villages in Pelion. The hiking is breath-taking, the beaches unencumbered by masses of tourists and the food in the local tavernas is usually fresh and delicious. Outside of August and weekends in the summer, the roads are free of any major traffic. If this is your style of off-the-beaten-path vacation, then it is unbeatable. Imagine what Cinque Terre was in the forties or fifties. You won't find the best infrastructure; electricity goes out regularly, water is cut in the summer because of high demand, but for some, it is worth it to experience a slower pace of life and to enjoy the natural beauty that is all around you in Pelion.

Mount Pelion was a total surprise for me. The mountain is majestic, covered by huge sweet chestnut and plane trees, with apple and pear trees further down and, at sea level, olive groves which stretch right down to the water. At the top there is a ski resort with an unbeatable view of the Pagasitic Gulf on one side and the beautiful, blue Aegean on the other.

Things not to miss - swimming in the the sea at Kala Nera on the west side of the mountain when the sun is setting, closely followed by swimming in the sea at Mylopotamos Beach on the east side of the mountain when the sun is rising. Sampling cheese pies from a local bakery, eating fish at a fish taverna but best of all visiting the tucked away square in the mountain village of Tsagarada. The square is slightly off the main road round the mountain and has the oldest plane tree you'll ever see. There's also a hotel across the square from the plane tree which has an excellent restaurant.
