The mountain Pelion is a paradise, if you take a round trip with taxi ( volosviptaxi.gr ) you will have a wonderful experience to see the most interest villages & beaches in the mountain. The ride on the forest and the view is amazing. I suggest to visit Makrinitsa ( the balcony of Pelion ) is a traditional village with great panorama view of Pagasitikos golf & Volos. For swimming go to Ntamouchari ( the place the make the Mamma Mia film ) nice beach with friendly and smiling people.

This year, in order not to have to decide between sea and mountain, we chose the two at Mount Pelion, in Magnesia. A region rich in myths and history, for it was there that the gods of Olympus resided in the summer and from there that Jason and the Argonauts went in search of the Golden Fleece. And it is always there that the legendary marriage took place between Peleus and Thetis, of which Homer, Pindar and Euripides speak in their writings. You are in the land of centaurs; there lived the centaur Chiron, whose apprentice was Achilles and Hercules, and who taught medicine at Aesculapius. Magnesia is for the visitor an invitation to initiation to ancient and modern civilization. The traditional villages, scattered on the slopes or perched on the steep mountain tops, complete the charm of this particularly green region, and what a contrast with the fascinating infinite shades of blue of the sea!
Our holidays
It's up to you to choose the type of vacation you want. We chose a relaxing holiday and stayed in Agios Dimitrios (Anatoli - see review). The nearest beach, if one does not count that of Agios Ioannis Piliou (Blue Flag), is that of Papa Nero - sandy, very beautiful (Blue Flag). The roads of Pelion are, for some, very steep, which is common in Greece, but drivers and vehicles may be subjected to a harsh test. We discovered different beaches, each extremely beautiful, some - or most of them - Blue Flag ones: Fakistra (BF) (steep bends and stairs to get there, but a rewarding experience), Agioi Saranta (BF) (see review), Mylopotamos (BF) (see review), Damouchari (see review), Limnionas - A challenge for every driver, even for the most experienced ones - and Lampinou, the last two - with sand and round pebbles, and clean, extremely clear, superb waters suitable for bathing, swimming and snorkeling). We who prefer exclusively sandy beaches (such as Papa Nero, Agioi Saranta or Mylopotamos) have discovered that even pebble beaches (Damouchari) or mixed (sand and pebble) beaches can be very pleasant, with their infinite shades of blue And turquoise and their optimum temperature (July). We loved Tsagarada, with its central square and its huge 1000 year old plane tree, one of the oldest in Europe. The arched bridge seemed to come out of another world! There was something magical about that place. We also loved Portaria. Canyoning at Mount Pelion (5 medium difficulty canyons) was a fantastic experience (see Mountain Escapes review)! Nice walk along the sea in Agios Ioannis Piliou. The contact with local gastronomy will complete your meeting with Pelion. We enjoyed the taverns Orea Ammoudia (see review), Akrogiali (see review), Akti (see review), Remezzo (see review), all in Agios Ioannis Piliou. We liked Café Victoria in Damouchari (see review), with such a beautiful view of the old harbor (see Damouhari port).
This is only a small part of the activities one can do at Mount Pelion - a region we simply fell in love with, and where we had a wonderful holiday.

The mount Pelion has a certain charm and you will feel it with your senses, and you have a wonderful view to Volos; It was the first time I visit the charmant village Makrinitsa;
Velvety vegetation, snakelike paths every where with big stones; vast olive tree plantations cover the most of mountain, and also deep forest with many water springs;
Locals love very much the mount Pelion, and Makrinitsa means High and Down, so they loves Volos (down) and the fresh air in the mountain (high). There are many fruit and vegetables production in all season: to try the many sweet sirup, and the good fruits, and many other flavors of Pelion, and I can observe hot peppers on an old door from a Pelion house; the most attraction was the old platane trees , in Makrinitsa, on the place , I think it was three or four, I never saw so high and big trees, I think her age are 2000 years, I was entered in the heart,volum of one, the biggest, so nice and romantic, like a little house in a tree.

I have been coming to the area for nearly 15 years due to family in the area and always try to make a point of heading up the mountain to take in the views and fresh air especially in the summer when the town can be very hot. The whole mountain is dotted with fantastic views, wonderful villages and many different sites.

A few years ago my wife and I spent a few days travelling all over Mount Pelion. There is accommodation from the quite cheap upto super luxury. Well worth the time to spend a day or so.
