Samui Beach village is typical Thailand and ideal for chilled out families. We had a lovely big villa about 30 meters from the beach with our own pool and lots of personal space to relax as a family (3 bedrooms all en suite and A/C and a lounge, dining room and kitchen (self catering - although we didn't bother apart the odd lunch/ snack). The beach village restaurant food was great (Thai and international as well as kids menu)and the personal chef system is brilliant. If you want to go out for dinner Rocky's is lovely and they send a bus to pick you up..ideal for romancing couples, less so for noisy kids! Everything was easy and chilled. We hired a car pretty much every day (very cheap and delivered to our door) and explored the whole island and went to different beaches, the fishermen's village (quaint), Chaweng(busy) and Lamai (Mad hahaha!). Beaches are lovely. The immediate beach outside the villa is fine for kids when the tide is in but at low tide go somewhere else. The communal pool next door is great too (better than the main one which looked a bit of a strange colour and was very chloriney). The villa was immaculate and the staff really looked after us which was lovely. Breakfast was delivered every day, our only gripe being that there was always way too much left over. The snake show down the road is hilarious (ignore the place and the tired look - it is the jungle not Henley on Thames! The Seal show and tiger show is typically 3rd world so go along, have a laugh and accept it for what it is, you will not change it ...kids don't notice the cringe worthy announcers....you will! LOL! The safari experience was a disappointment to us but SBV have since changed companies for this which we are delighted to hear. The staff at SBV could not have been more friendly or helpful. Luke was extremely knowledgeable about the island and gave some great suggestions for beaches and places to visit. All in all a lovely holiday in a chilled out place!

Room Tip: Ban Suuay is very nice. Unsure what the other villas are like although friends of ours stayed in a villa down the road and loved it.

We stayed at Samui Beach Village last month and whilst we enjoyed the island we were sorry to have chosen Samui Beach village as our place to stay. The villa was nice enough but we were rudely awakened on our first morning by loud construction noise just a few metres away from our bedroom windows. Behind our property a villa is in the stages of being totally pulled down and re-built. During our stay angle grinders and jack-hammers were in use all day every day from 9 until 5 with a small break for lunch. One english-speaking worker on the site told me that the constrcution is due to carry on until at least Christmas 2012.
Needless to say we were very upset about this and the fact that we had not been warned and asked for a solution from the villa management team. They explained that they could do nothing about the noise as that villa was owned by someone else and they had no control over it. They did offer scant compensation of a fairly average boat trip and use of a driver for a day. Weigh it up for yourselves - peace and quiet on your hard earned holiday or living next to a construction site and getting a boat trip!! Woohoo!
Whilst our villa was closest, every other villa in the complex is less than 100 metres away and every person we approached about it in the village told us that they could hear it too and it was spoiling their holiday.
It's a real shame as the area is nice and the villas are OK, but I would steer clear of SBV for the next year or so at least. See also the pictures of the pool that they didn't clean during our stay.

Dear JackL208

We understand that you did not enjoy the Villa experience with your friends from the previous 2 reviews and we can only reiterate once again, the Villa you stayed in, including the concierge, cleaning and management of it is NOT under the management of Samui Beach Village, but of a totally separate Company - Samui Villa Retreats. Indeed as theses reviews relate to the villa management received by that Company, not us, we are considering what action can be taken to get these reviews removed.

The privately owned Villa under renovation still has a little work to be done and we are communicating directly with the Villa owner now to carefully minimize disturbances to guests. All that remains is the job of rebuilding which carries little or no noise, building walls, plastering, painting etc.. so there is clearly some misunderstanding in your comments re the timing of completion. We have a full assurance from the owner of the building that the project including all internal work, Kitchens, bathrooms etc. will be totally complete by mid-November 2011

We do wish that you could return to Samui Beach Village, and stay in one of our managed villa's which we take care of and allow our excellent team of staff to look after you, as I think you will be thoroughly happy with your stay.

I stayed in SBV and while the property and location were pleasant enough we were soon assaulted by a barrage of noise from a villa directly behind ours. While this was not directly the responsibility of SBV, a pro-active and competent team would be aware of the issue and warn customers accordingly (note the reply will come that they didnt know about the construction - something that is impossible to believe given how small the complex is). However more importantly their subsequent management of the problem was shocking and totally unacceptable. There was an empty promise of re-location after their admission that "the noise was intolerable and no holiday maker should be subjected to it" this came to nothing - we were then offered a "free trip to a National Park and free taxi services" (initially ongoing but then amended to one day of taxi services) - Imagine my surprise when I was presented with a bill on our last day for these compensatory offers - "Oh we couldnt get the landlord to pay - so you will have to" - when I refused to pay for a trip that was offered by way of compensation I was verbally threatened and then also threatened with being taken to prison - all this in front of my children which was a charming end to the holiday. When I then recalled the management to the villa to try and arrange for a suitable and fair outcome they offered further compensation which they now wash their hands of claiming its not their responsibility. While all this was going on our pool was having untreated filthy water pumped into it to no avail as the level continued to drop by a foot or so. So for the last 3 to 4 days of our holiday we couldnt swim in the pool - admittedly we were "allowed" to use the central facilities some walk away while the pool was out of operation but this really wasnt what we paid for. I found the staff and Koh Samui fabulous but the management that we dealt with at SBV aggressive and incompetent. The lack of desire to take responsibility was/is hugely frustrating - 3 days free stay by way of compensation (from landlord) would mean me flying my family back to Thailand for 3 days - as impractical as it is undesirable. Go to Koh Samui, enjoy the golf, the scenary the wonderful people and food - please do not subject yourself to the management team at Samui Beach Village. You could end up in prison.........!

Room Tip: please beware - despite the inevitable response that will attempt to paper over the cracks of the issues - I would never deal with these people again - I wouldnt have taken the time out of my day to make these points if I had been dealt with in a decent manner - I have given every opportunity for SBV to behave properly and give some gesture even at the time overlooking the trheats of the police etc but to no avail.

As you have acknowledged, both your Villa and the Villa under renovation were not the responsibility of SBV, and the explanation to do with the construction work has been dealt with in our earlier response to Tony D

However regarding the ‘management of the problem’ we are extremely sorry to hear that you and Tony D were not taken care of by your Villa management company.

As you have correctly stated this management Company is not in fact Samui Beach Village but is actually called Samui Villa Retreats which is not based in the Samui Beach Village resort, but elsewhere on the island and which comes in daily to manage the particular villa at which you stayed. Samui Villa Retreats is a completely separate company employed by the villa owner to manage his villa and is in no way part of Samui Beach Village

Given this, and as you already know, Samui Beach Village staff had nothing at all to do with the day to day management of your villa whilst you were in resort. In fact when you approached them directly, our staff did their best to assist you, but unfortunately they could not offer as much assistance as they would have liked for this reason

The standard of Customer service by Samui Beach Village is one of the biggest assets of our Company and is widely accepted as excellent. Indeed I would like to refer you to the fact that almost all the testimonials on our site testify to the excellent standard of care that the staff at Samui Beach Village achieve with our guests.

Obviously your comments to do with management of the situation on resort should actually be pointed to the afore mentioned Company Samui Villa retreats – not Samui Beach Village

Although this villa was not under our management we truly regret that you're experience on Samui was not as enjoyable as it should have been.

We still hope that you are willing and able to return to Samui Beach Village, and take advantage of the offer made, though from your comments you may not be prepared to this for which we can sincerely express our regret.

If you long for the sound of drilling, hammering and construction then a stay at Samui Beach Village is a must. We stayed in August 2011 and were delighted to find that our villa backed onto a construction site. Imagine our joy each morning as the workers started their aural onslaught, relaxing by a murky, cloudy pool has never been so much fun. What is nice is that SBV and the villa agents keep you fooled into thinking they are doing something about stopping the noise, but then as it dawns on you that they are just joking, you can tense up and properly enjoy the experience. The offer of compensation is also an enjoyable whim, which once you return home is of course another illusion, all part of the magical SBV service. What surprises me is that they don't make more of a feature of the construction when selling you your luxury holiday, as there are so few places these days where you can get right next to an array of deafening power tools and have such quality vistas of the local workers hammering their way through concrete, whilst wasting your hard-earned money.
Once I've been to every other oversold, disappointing and poorly organised villa retreat, I'll possibly return to Samui Beach Village to enjoy it all over again.

Room Tip: Don't stay here. For your own sanity.

Thank you for your recent visit to Koh Samui, and your recent review of your privately rented Villa.

As you know, your booking was taken direct through the owners representative and although Samui Beach Village supported your booking for pre arrival information, your villa was not under the management of Samui Beach Village. Indeed when you arrived, the management team that works directly on behalf of the owner of the villa greeted you and was responsible for all arrangements during your stay.

As was explained during your visit, the renovation work was undertaken in a villa completely out of the control of your guest services manager (J) or Samui Beach Village. J and his team did everything they could, supported by our team, to try and stop the work or minimise the noise that was coming from the site, but unfortunately although able to reduce the noise for the last few days of your stay they could not completely stop it happening.

J did offer some complementary trips and services to you whilst on resort which you were able to take advantage of, and also was able to negotiate with the owner a significant discount to return to the resort whenever you were able, which unfortunately you are not able to take advantage of.

We truly regret that you're experience on Samui was not as enjoyable as it should have been and we do hope that you will reconsider the free nights offered directly by the Villa owner. Thankfully, the noisy work has now been completed and the finishing touches on the privately owned Villa are almost complete.

I do hope that you are willing and able to return to Samui Beach Village, and take advantage of the offer made, and truly sample the beauty of the resort and the island in the way that you should have experienced them during your recent visit.

We stayed at SBV in August 2011 (6-22 Aug) in the Villa Bann Fah Sai. We had a good holiday but feel that the resort and villa were oversold to us:

Positives: Luke and his team are enthusiastic and try to resolve any issues but not always to the satisfaction of the customer. The beach is very picturesque and almost deserted. Service is good: the staff are friendly and helpful. Food is good too.

Negatives: we were sold a luxury 5 star villa and resort and do not feel that the resort or accomodation lives up to this. I would say the facilities are 4 star and the villa 3-4 star. There was no air conditioning in the living areas and we had numerous problems with the villa in terms of air conditioning in the bedrooms and things not quite working properly - ceiling fans. Aug was very hot and wih 4 young children it was vital to us that these things worked relaibly. We were offered a free chef service to make up for the inconvenience. This was a nice gesture but not really good enough given how much we paid for a 'luxury villa'.

We were also told that there would no building work going on the resort but this was not the case. It did not disturb us too much but could have done. I know SBV do not own all the villas but they manage the resort - the sales patter from Simon in the uk was incorrect and misleading in my view.

The room service/cleaning was average. Sheets were not changed very often and beach towels not always left. Parts of the villa were also not to a high standard of cleanliness.

The resort itself is developing in a piecemeal fashion . The road from the reception to the villa's is a bit grotty and not what i would expect in a 5 star resort (even if it is in Koh Samui which is very chilled).

We did enjoy our stay but not sure we would come back.

Thank you for your recent visit to Samui Beach Village, Koh Samui.

It's great to hear that overall you had a good holiday and that you felt our team were enthusiastic and willing to help you enjoy your holiday experience. Samui Beach Village is unique on Koh Samui, combining the very best of private Villa accommodation, coupled with resort-type facilities. It is true that ALL of the Villas within Samui Beach Village are privately owned. Some of the Villas are rented out for vacation purposes and some are private residences.

One of the Villas is currently under-going some minor re-modelling. It is one of the private residences not managed by us and is scheduled for completion this month. I'm glad to hear that it did not disturb you.

Thank you for your comments regarding cleanliness. As per our linen policy, bedding is changed every 3 days, or as required. This helps us conserve Samui's precious resources. Beach and bath towels are also changed on request and new towels laid out each morning after the In-Villa breakfast delivery.

Regarding the air conditioning in your villa, your comments about air conditioning in the Living area have been noted and passed to the owner, and a new unit will be installed very shortly. Although we did have a problem with the air conditioning in one of the bedrooms – this was resolved the following day as soon as we could get an engineer on site.

After a wonderfully busy high season, we will continue to improve our cleaning standards and enhance our maintenance program to ensure our Villas are of the highest quality. Thanks again Marc O for sharing your feedback and helping us improve our services and facilities. All the team here at Samui Beach Village wish you and your family pleasant memories of Samui and hope to welcome you again in the future.
