We very much enjoyed the exhibition on the local painters - better display and explanation on Swedish artists than in some major galleries. Bicycle museum not really for us but might interest others. Not a lot to do otherwise in the fortress.

The people were very nice and help you whenever you need it. It wasn't that cheap (10€ adults, 8€ students), but the parking was free. It was interesting to see and they had audio guides for those who don't speak swedish. But if you speak swedish you should absolutly join the tour! They turned the tour into a little theater! :)

First of all: It is a historic place and there is a very good view from the castle. The museum had a lot to give: An excellent exhibition of local art from around 1880-1900 that is just like french impressionism. Wonderful paintings.
Then an exhibition on the local cultural history and an exhibition of bicycles that was very good

We visit the castle every time we are in Varberg on vacation. Both to sit there and enjoy the view over the city and the sea, and to visit the exiting museum. This year we also had a guided tour which was a play. It was very fun, but notice that the play is in Swedish.

I visited with my husband many years after childhood visits so it was nostalgic for me and new to him. I speak Swedish but he doesn't. We were given headsets for what was described as an English audio tour and were disappointed to find that there were only a very limited number of points in the exhibition that this worked, although those were interesting. It shouldn't be too difficult to produce some handouts with translations of the material written in Swedish on the walls that could be handed out to foreign visitors who were interested. I could help my husband a bit but I'm no historical expert!
It was great to see the expanded Bocksten Man exhibit with his facial reconstruction. One of the staff who was in that room was very helpful and spent time explaining things in English.
There's a nice cafe which is a social enterprise in the museum ( there are other eateries within the wider castle area) and the museum shop has good quality gifts. There are lockers so you don't have to carry bags and coats around ( need a 10k coin but it's returned)
