I have visited this museum more times than I can count. As a foreigner living in Sweden, I get lots of visitors and this is where I take them. It's an ok museum, but if you aren't fluent in Swedish then you can't read about anything. It would be so much better to have info on the displays in both Swedish and English. Not everyone wants to take an audio tour and spend so much time.

It is maybe not expected to find something special in a smaller city like Varberg. However, here you can find one of the oldest men in Sweden. Not much left, but he has been reconstructed, and his cloths are still rather intact after hundreds of years. A small but important detail is the bottom that they think killed a famous Swedish king with. A lot more to see about the history of this part of Sweden.

Bockstenmannen is really nice, but that is pretty much it for the museum. Most of the castle can be visited without paying the entrance, so just do that. From the top there is a good view of the town and beach.
The museum has chosen to mix archeology/history and art, and doing the two things at the same time means that it is only done half. Too bad...
There is a room with children activities, which seemed nice.

I have spent a lot of time in Varberg and I have visited the old museum quite a few times as a child and as an adult however this was the first time since the refurbishment.
I think the entrance fee is quite important, 100 SEK per person, a bit of an overkill. No substantial information in English nor French (or German...) so I had to act as the translator.

I am very fascinated by the "bullet-button" (kulknappen) which is said to have killed Charles XII and the myths / stories surrounding this chapter in Swedish history. Sadly in the new museum this part is only very small.
On the other hand my other obsession, Bockstensmannen has a room all to himself where I could yet again indulge in the story and look at this marvelous archeological find!

The museum is worth a visit but I do think the entrance fee is too important. If the history of Halland doesn't really interest you then just go for a stroll on the walls of the fortress, admire the view of the sea and the city and then go for a fika and spend those 100 SEK.

The fasting itself (apart from the museum) was closed, so don't expect to be able to look inside but you can take a walk around. It was very windy when we were there, so be prepared. The museum requires an entry fee. It is interesting, although little information is provided in English. The museum includes the Bocksten man (body found in a peat bog with the best preserved examples of middle ages clothing), which is the central attraction. You are provided with a book in English to help explain that display. The cafe is suitable for lunch.
