‘Tomppeliaukio Kirkko’, the Rock Church, not playing rock music but built into a rock outcrop, in the centre of suburbia, You can walk over the top of the rock and all you see is part of a large copper dome. There was a funeral service going on and the Church was closed for almost another hour, we killed some time browsing souvenir shops, buy a drink etc. We waited patiently until the Church opened at 4 pm, the horde of people that were waiting with us, spilled in, cameras poised. It was pretty special, the whole roof was a radial web of thin concrete beams radiating from the centre, but most of the whole roof was concentric circles of thin copper strips, it looks like a large metallic UFO is hovering over the congregation, it is a really stunning building.

In the heart of Helsinki, the circular building is built into solid rock with a copper dome roof. As a Christian I found the specific lack of ornament particularly appealing (it is a Lutheran Church) and the acoustics were superb. A pianist was playing classical music on the grand piano, on a Thursday morning.
Apparently the organ is played at the 10 am Sunday service...sadly we weren’t able to be there
Rock church is well worth a visit...whether Christian or not.

What an amazing and unique building. Carved into stone and yet still a worshipful setting. Heard the Finnish national instrument (like an auto-harp) being played when we visited and loved it.

This was interesting place to see. Neat the way it was built and to see pictures of the construction before and after. Note there are NO restrooms in the church, however, there is the church café on the side of the church which has restrooms for customers. Coffee there is very god and worth the break.
