Disappointing stay

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Jul 2018via mobile
The bathroom hangers are all broken, the shower curtain is stained. The room looks pathetic & it’s the worst hotel stay of our trip in Iceland. Overall a very bad impression of our first night in Reyjavik. The location is central though .

We decided to do this on a whim! Booked on Saturday and left Sunday. Was looking for something inexpensive with a private bath. This was the right price. We stayed in room 6 at Ranargata 11. The room was behind the main house and very private. We arrived late but the staff emailed us directions to the room and left the key for us on the desk,
My biggest complaint was the bathroom had no hooks or towel racks to hang wet towels or bathsuits. It looks like they had one once that pulled out of the wall. Also there was no room for toiletries in the bathroom.
I wish the Management had left us a note with our key about when breakfast was served etc. We tried to get in the main house one morning and the door was locked so we walked a few blocks for coffee.
The location was excellent. We were able to walk all over the city with easy access to restaurants, shopping and museums.
Overall, it was a good value for the money and I would stay there again if I go back..

Nice guesthouse, with friendly staff. Clean. We received a great big room that could probably have 4 people quite comfortably. Two shared bathrooms, which wasn't a problem at all (only occupied once when I was in need). Location is great! A stones throw away from the harbour (whale-excursion) and reasonable walking distance from the church. Remember that prices are quite steep overall in Iceland.

I spent here fortunately only one night with my boyfriend. The 2 main problems that made this guesthouse uncomfortable and grubby:

- no heating working, our room was extremely cold more than outside and we slept the all night freezing even if I asked for resolve this problem more than once but none did anything to make the heating working. At least, would be clever let the customers change the room, I guess!!

- super dirty the bathroom with hairs and stuff in the shower, the same in the bathroom with the sink broken and bad smelling. Bad smelling also as we arrived in the room. The same the kitchen was something decadence and even more dirty. I guess neither the sheets of the bad were cleaned.

I have been in several different type of hotels, guesthouse and hostels and I had almost never had problems like this (for sure never slept without heating available!!!!) for these kind of guesthouse for sure the price is extremely high because of the services, no-cleaning and building (I almost couldn’t open any window!!) shouldn’t be ask more than 10€!!

Having never stayed in a guesthouse before I was a little unsure as to what to expect. If I'm honest, I wasn't thrilled about sharing a bathroom but I really had nothing to be concerned about!

After a flight delay we arrived at almost midnight and were dropped off in the town by our transfer bus. Thankfully the guesthouse is located so close to town that we only had to walk for a few minutes before we found it. We had a bit of trouble with the key safe but were able to call Jonathan and were let in immediately!

The guesthouse is full of lovely, funny little signs on the walls, including one asking us to remove our shoes at the door. We didn't mind at all, I appreciated the cleanliness and actually we felt it added to the homely feel.

We stayed in Room 6 and were so impressed as soon as we walked in! It was a beautiful room; a great size for 2 people, lovely and cosy in the evening and it was bright and airy when the sun came in the next morning. The ONLY improvement I would suggest is that we didn't have anywhere to hang our clothes and would have preferred a double bed to two singles pushed together. Other than that we had no complaints at all!

Breakfast the next morning was more than we could have expected! It was delicious. We helped ourselves to juice, tea and coffee whilst our breakfast was freshly prepared for us. The staff are so friendly and made us feel very welcome.

My partner proposed to me on our last night in Reykjavik and after a whirlwind evening of celebrating and watching the northern lights, the Captain Reykjavik Guesthouse was a lovely retreat to relax before our early morning flight home. It definitely played a part in making our trip memorable and we both considered it to be a home from home.

We paid in advance for breakfast before our airport transfer time was brought forward. They very kindly refunded this amount to us when we returned home.

We will definitely be recommending the Captain Reykjavik Guesthouse to anyone travelling to Reykjavik!

It was central, clean and warm, but there is one main point to consider: the living room at ground floor has no door, so if people are there in the morning for breakfast or at evening chatting you will hear them up to your room in the first floor. We stayed in Ránagarta 11.
